Dice el refrán que “el amor empieza por la casa”. Eso es precisamente como empezamos nuestra tarea misionera. Desde casa. Desde Colombia y desde Puerto Rico. Al celebrar 30 años de habernos conocido, Dios nos da la oportunidad de servir en casa (Puerto Rico) y volver a casa (Colombia). Y lo hacemos en “el avión del amor”.

¿Recuerdas la serie en TV, “El Crucero del Amor”? Pues, nosotros adaptamos el título a “El Avión del Amor” que nos llevó en mayo y junio a servir en Puerto Rico y nos llevará próximamente a servir en Colombia. Es por Él y por ustedes que pudimos ir a Puerto Rico y es por Él y por ustedes que llegaremos a Colombia.

Desde que los huracanes Irma y María azotaron a Puerto Rico en septiembre del 2017, nuestros corazones ardían por apoyar a nuestra gente. Lo hicimos desde la distancia a través de la comunicación, informando a nuestra red cómo podían apoyar los esfuerzos y trabajando directamente con nuestras Iglesias Bautistas de Puerto Rico y el departamento de Ayuda en Desastres de ABHMS de las Iglesias Bautistas Americanas en EE.UU. De inmediato, recibimos noticias de iglesias y regiones en nuestra red deseosas de también apoyar en estos esfuerzos de “Reconstruir, Restituir y Renovar a Puerto Rico”.

En mayo nuestro hijo Alberto y su servidora acompañamos a 8 hermanas y hermanos de la PIB de Greenwood, Indiana en el primero de dos grupos voluntarios con quienes iríamos a la isla a ser parte de la reconstrucción. Indiana es, después de Puerto Rico, la segunda región que más nos apoya. Fueron quienes nos consiguieron vivienda en la transición entre España y Nicaragua y ahora entre Nicaragua y Colombia. Contamos con 7 miembros de nuestro MPT de las regiones de Indiana/Kentucky y Greater Indianapolis. Fue una bendición acompañarles y servir como familia en la Iglesia Bautista de Colinas Verdes donde pastorea Eneida Angleró y en la Iglesia Bautista Ebenezer de Levittown donde pastorea Sonia Villodas; siervas del Señor, sumamente comprometidas con el Evangelio y sus congregaciones. En ambas congregaciones encontramos personas de la membresía con quienes trabajamos mano a mano, a quienes conocimos y pudimos ofrecer no solo el apoyo material sino el apoyo emocional de ser una misma familia en el Señor. Damos gracias al Seminario Evangélico de Puerto Rico donde nos hospedamos y a Angelique y su familia que prepararon la gran mayoría de los alimentos.

De ñapa en ese viaje, pudimos compartir en una reunión con parte del cuerpo pastoral de las Iglesias Bautistas de Puerto Rico. Kevin Walden, secretario general asociado de las Iglesias Bautistas Americanas en EE.UU., estaba en la isla para ofrecer orientaciones de la iniciativa de iglesias hermanas. Fue un tiempo de refrigerio y también de afirmar la coparticipación de las Iglesias Bautistas Americanas, el trabajo de ABHMS a través de la iniciativa de Reconstruir, Restaurar y Renovar a Puerto Rico y de ABFMS-Ministerios Internacionales a través del cuerpo misionero comisionado por las Iglesias Bautistas de Puerto Rico. Las diferentes áreas de servicio (general, nacional, internacional y regional) sirviendo coordinadamente para el bienestar del prójimo en diferentes lugares.

En junio nuestras hijas Carolina y Daniela junto a su servidora acompañamos a 17 hermanas y hermanos de NextGen en New Jersey y Mission MYnded de North Carolina en el segundo de los dos grupos voluntarios con quienes iríamos a la isla a ser parte de la reconstrucción. New Jersey es, después de Puerto Rico, la cuarta región que más nos apoya. Fueron quienes, bajo el liderato de Lee Spitzer siendo su pastor general/ministro ejecutivo, idearon la ofrenda Go Global 30 donde las iglesias aportan $30 al mes para compartir entre las unidades misioneras apoyadas por la región. Recibimos a NextGen y Mission MYnded en Nicaragua a través de Samaritan Feet y apoyamos la Iglesia Bautista Jehová Yiré en San Marcos, que siguen visitando y apoyando. Contamos con 3 miembros de nuestro MPT de la región de New Jersey. Fue una bendición acompañar al grupo y servir como familia en el Centro de Retiro Ruth Maldonado en Las Cruces, nuestro Green Lake boricua…

Regresar a Las Cruces fue un placer y una bendición. Desde la niñez y la adolescencia, Las Cruces era el lugar de la familia bautista en Puerto Rico. Ver cómo cesó su uso y estuvo cerrado por años fue de gran tristeza. Nuestra tarea sería continuar la remodelación del Centro, comenzada por los grupos de Pennsylvania y el anterior de New Jersey que habían estado en mayo. Nos asignaron pintar literas para 30 personas y se limpiaron, rasparon y pintaron para 46. Además se pintó un cuarto, una oficina, la entrada del Centro y quedaron arreglados los baños y las duchas del cuarto que se trabajó. Mientras tanto, el grupo de TX, que también se estaba hospedando en el Centro, se encargó de todos los alrededores, podando, desyerbando, cortando ganchos de árboles ya muertos y removiendo verjas rotas y enmohecidas. Junto a nuestros grupos, también se hospedaron personas de Metro NY (incluyendo amistades del ayer que no veíamos hacía tiempo) y un matrimonio de Indiana (que vive cerca de nuestras familias).

Puerto Rico se levanta y el Centro de Retiro Ruth Maldonado se levanta. ¡Cuánto gozo hubieran sentido nuestros amados Eleuterio Miranda, Pedro Parrilla y Félix López de ver este milagro! Pedrito Hernández sí podrá ser testigo de cómo Dios sacó algo bueno del Huracán María: el Centro de Retiro Ruth Maldonado reabrió sus puertas para servir a la comunidad y seguir siendo de bendición para quienes lleguen, así como lo fue para muchos de nosotros en nuestra niñez y adolescencia.

Dios proveyó fuerzas y ganas para ir más allá de lo esperado… Incluyendo a quienes estuvimos en el Centro, esa semana Héctor Alexis Rivera y Abigaíl Medina apoyaron y fueron apoyados por 93 voluntarios y voluntarias. En el Centro, Moncho, Ruth y nuestra querida Verónica nos tongonearon y añoñaron con ricas comidas y un rico jengibre con leche cada noche que fue el hit de la semana.

De ñapas en este segundo viaje, acompañamos al MMBPR en su culto especial de Cruz Blanca, acompañamos a la familia de nuestro pastor y capellán Pedro Parrilla en su culto memorial, tuvimos un tiempo de koinonía con el secretariado ejecutivo y asociado de nuestras IBPR y un cariñito especial con nuestra querida Deborah. Por supuesto, en ambos viajes, pude visitar brevemente a mi Papi.

Baterías recargadas más allá del cansancio físico de los trabajos de estas dos semanas de voluntariado en Puerto Rico, seguimos preparándonos para la transición a Colombia. Estamos agradecidos por cada persona que aumentó su aporte o comenzó a aportar para nuestra asignación a Colombia. Estamos más cerca cada semana. Se avecinan transiciones familiares. Estas próximas semanas serán intensas, emocionales y de arduo trabajo. Contamos con sus oraciones, con su cariño y con sus aportes para llegar a la meta.

Y mientras tanto, en Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Orleans y donde haga falta, sigamos reconstruyendo, restaurando y renovando por amor a nuestro Dios y a nuestro prójimo. El amor empieza por la casa (Jerusalén), sigue por el vecindario (Judea y Samaria) y se extiende hasta donde el Señor nos tiene y nos lleva (lo último de la tierra)… Que Él les/nos siga bendiciendo y usando.

The proverb says, “love starts at home”. That is precisely how we started our missionary journey. At home. In Colombia and in Puerto Rico. As we celebrate 30 years since we met, God gives us the opportunity to serve at home (Puerto Rico) and to go back home (Colombia). We do so in “the love plane”.

Remember the TV series, “The Love Boat”? Well, we have adapted the title to “The Love Plane” that took us in May and June to serve in Puerto Rico and will soon take us to serve in Colombia. Because of Him and because of you we were able to go to Puerto Rico and because of Him and you we will go to Colombia.

Since Hurricanes Irma and María in Puerto Rico last September 2017, our hearts burned with desire to support our people. We did so from the distance through communications, informing our network how to support the efforts and work led by our Baptist Churches of Puerto Rico and the Disaster Relief of ABHMS and the ABCUSA. Immediately, we received news from churches and regions in our network also wanting to support in these “Rebuilding, Restoring and Renewing Puerto Rico” efforts.

In May our son Alberto and yours truly went with 8 sisters and brothers from FBC Greenwood, Indiana in the first of two volunteer teams with whom we went to the island to be a part of the reconstruction. Indiana is, after Puerto Rico, the second most supportive region in our network. They got us housing in the transition between Spain and Nicaragua and now again between Nicaragua and Colombia. We have 7 MPTers in the Indiana/Kentucky and Greater Indianapolis regions. It was a blessing to accompany them and serve together as a family at the Colinas Verdes Baptist Church where Eneida Angleró is the pastor and at the Ebenezer-Levittown Baptist Church where Sonia Villodas is the pastor; servants of the Lord, completely committed to the Gospel and their congregations. In both congregations we found church members with whom to serve hand in hand, whom we met and were able to share not only the material gifts but also the emotional support of being from the same family of the Lord. We thank the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico for housing us and Angelique and her family for preparing most of our meals.

As a bonus on that trip, we were able to share in a meeting with part of the pastoral leadership of our Baptist Churches of Puerto Rico (IBPR, for the name in Spanish). Kevin Walden, ABCUSA associate general secretary, was in the island providing guidance in the sister-church initiative. It was a refreshing time and also a confirmation of the collaboration between ABCUSA, ABHMS through RRRPR and ABFMS-International Ministries American Baptist through the missionary body commissioned through the IBPR. The different areas of service (general, national, international, and regional, respectively) serving in one accord to bless their neighbor in different places.

In June our daughters Carolina and Daniela with yours truly joined 17 siblings from NextGen in New Jersey and Mission MYnded from North Carolina in the second of two volunteer teams with whom we went to the island to join the rebuilding. New Jersey is, after Puerto Rico, the fourth most supportive region in our network. Their region, under Lee Spitzer’s leadership while he was their senior pastor/executive minister, created the Go Global 30 Clubs where each church is encouraged to give $30 a month to be shared among their regionally sponsored global servant units. NextGen and Mission MYnded went with us to Nicaragua through Samaritan Feet to support Jehová Yiré Baptist Church in San Marcos, and they continue visiting and supporting them. We have 3 MPTers in ABCNJ. It was a blessing to accompany this group and serve as a family at the Ruth Maldonado Retreat Center in Las Cruces, our Puerto Rican Green Lake…

Going back to Las Cruces was a joy and a blessing. During childhood and adolescence, Las Cruces was the place for the Baptist family in Puerto Rico. To see it dwindle through the years, and eventually close, was very sad. Our task was to continue the Center’s makeover, started by the teams from Penn Pennsylvania and the previous one from New Jersey that had been there in May. Our homework was to paint bunk-beds for 30 people yet they cleaned, scraped, and painted for 46. Besides, they painted the room, the office, and the doorway of the Center and fixed the toilets and showers of the room that was painted. Meanwhile, the group from TX, also staying at the Center, took care of the outdoors, mowing, cutting limbs of dead trees, and removing broken and rusted fences. Besides our teams, people from Metro NY (including friends we had not seen in years) and a young couple from Indiana (who lives near our dear ones) were also there.

Puerto Rico arises and the Ruth Maldonado Retreat Center arises. How much joy would our beloved Eleuterio Miranda, Pedro Parrilla, and Félix López have felt to see this miracle! Pedrito Hernández can be the witness of how God turned Hurricane Maria into something good: the Ruth Maldonado Retreat Center has reopened its doors to serve the community and continue being a blessing to those who come, as many of us were blessed during our childhood and teen years.

God provided strength and the desire to go beyond what was expected… Including those of us staying at the Center, that week Héctor Alexis Rivera and Abigaíl Medina supported and were supported by a total of 93 volunteers. At the Center, Moncho, Ruth, and our dear Verónica pampered and took very good care of us with tasty meals and a yummy gingered milk every night that became the hit of the week!

The bonuses of that second trip were: to accompany the women in their White Cross special service, to accompany our pastor and chaplain Pedro Parrilla’s family at his memorial service, a time of fellowship with the executive and associate ministers of our IBPR and a very special parenthesis with our dearest Deborah. Of course, in both visits, we were able to touch base and see my Dad.

Batteries recharged beyond the physical effect of those weeks of volunteer service in Puerto Rico, we continue preparing for the transition to Colombia. We are grateful to each person and church that has increased or started giving toward our ongoing support of this new assignment to Colombia. We are closer each week. Family transitions are around the corner. The next couple of weeks will be intense, emotional, and filled with lots to do. We are counting on your prayers, love, and support to reach the goal.

Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Orleans wherever needed, let us continue rebuilding, restoring, and renewing out of love to our God and our neighbors. Love starts at home (Jerusalem), carries on to the neighborhood (Judea and Samaria), and extends to wherever the Lord has us and takes us (the ends of the earth)… May He continue to bless you/us…
