When people hear the word mission, they often picture someone boarding a plane, learning a new language, or moving halfway around the world. While those are certainly ways people participate in God’s mission, they are far from the only ways. 

The truth is that mission usually begins much closer to home. 

Many of us care deeply about what God is doing around the world. We enjoy reading stories, watching videos, or hearing updates from global servants. But at some point, God may be inviting us to take a step beyond simply learning about mission and begin engaging in it more intentionally. 

The good news? You do not have to begin with a giant leap. You can start right where you are. 

One simple step is prayer. Set aside a few minutes each week to pray for a global servant, a ministry partner, or a specific country. Families can include a prayer for God’s work around the world at the dinner table. Small groups can choose one ministry or global servant to learn about and pray for regularly. Prayer may seem small, but it connects our hearts to God’s purposes and reminds us that mission is ultimately God’s work. 

Another meaningful step is building a relationship with a global servant. Invite a global servant to share with your church, Bible study, youth group, or community gathering. Hearing firsthand stories can deepen understanding, inspire faith, and help us see God’s work through a different lens. Often, these encounters lead to lasting prayer and partnership. 

Many people also choose to support a missionary family through prayer, encouragement, or financial giving. A note of encouragement, a care package, or a commitment to pray regularly can make a significant difference to those serving far from home. Mission is sustained not only by those who go, but also by those who faithfully send and support them. 

If you’re looking for a more immersive experience, consider participating in a mission immersion trip, learning experience, or volunteer opportunity. These experiences can broaden our perspective, challenge our assumptions, and help us discover new ways God may be calling us to serve. 

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that you do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. Mission engagement is not reserved for experts, pastors, or those with a dramatic calling story. It is an invitation extended to all of us.

Pray. Learn. Give. Invite. Go. 

Start small. Start simply. Just start. 

You may discover that as you take one faithful step, God is already preparing the next one.
