Marzo está lleno de lecciones. Y las letras de este mes son gimel y reish. Gimel representa geshem que significa lluvia y reishrepresenta raglayim que significa pies. Estas palabras del alfabeto hebreo se siguen entrelazando en nuestras experiencias de discipulado…

Siempre decimos que como Discípulos debemos ser las manos y pies de Jesús. Las iniciativas de paz y justicia se fundamentan en este principio. En Nicaragua, tuvimos el honor de servir con quienes literalmente son las manos y pies de Jesús en aquel amado país. El Rdo. Dr. Gustavo Parajón es un nicaragüense que dejó un legado de servicio y ministerio de salud pública. Fundó AMOS Salud y Esperanza junto a David y Laura Parajón, donde también sirve nuestra colega Christine Lafferty.

Después del terremoto en Managua del 1972, Don Gustavo fundó CEPAD, una agencia ecuménica reconocida de desarrollo y alivio. Damaris Albuquerque fue asistente de Don Gustavo por muchos años y eventualmente fue la directora ejecutiva de CEPAD hasta que se jubiló en diciembre del 2020.

Nuestro colega Dan Buttry y nuestra Damaris Albuquerque escribieron el libro “Healing the World: Gustavo Parajón, Public Health and Peacemaking Pioneer” (Sanando el Mundo: Gustavo Parajón, Pionero del Servicio Público y Pacificador). Fue publicado recientemente (solo en inglés, por el momento) y el 100% de las regalías van a AMOS Salud y Esperanza. Dan puede enviar copias firmadas a lugares en EE.UU. y Puerto Rico. Cuando pensamos en estas iniciativas de paz y justicia, y en ser las manos y pies de Jesús, podemos también pensar en la lluvia y las bendiciones cuando escuchamos del rebalse del Espíritu Santo que se ha convertido en el Avivamiento de Asbury University ((https://www.asbury.edu/outpouring/) y que ha impactado a universidades y seminarios en EE.UU., y aún a otros países donde Dios está presente y revelándose a Sí mismo a quienes lo buscan con un corazón contrito. El Espíritu Santo está empoderando a Su pueblo para ir y ser pacificadores que compartan Su Evangelio con libertad y amor…

Renovemos nuestro compromiso de ser Sus discípulas y discípulos que servimos a quienes nos rodean como Don Gustavo y tantas personas nos han enseñado. Desde las mujeres, la juventud y la niñez en Chile; a las mujeres vulnerables en España; a personas refugiadas en Nicaragua; a familias migrantes e indígenas en Colombia: nuestro amoroso Dios se traduce en amar a quienes nos rodean como a nosotros y nosotras mismas. Aprendemos, vivimos la Palabra y la enseñamos para que se repita el ciclo. Gracias por apoyarnos en la misión.

Estén pendientes a las actualizaciones en las páginas de FB/Instagram y el grupo en FB en nuestro tercer viaje a Puerto Rico (en este año de transición) donde estaremos en su reunión anual y visitaremos iglesias en el camino. En el mes de marzo recordamos la muerte de Don Gustavo el día 13 del mes en 2011. Siempre recordamos su consejo de “dar y recibir al menos 7 abrazos al día”. Siendo él médico y pastor amoroso, es un consejo que tomamos en serio pues nos recuerda cómo podemos sanar al mundo, en el nombre de Jesús, a través de expresiones de amor que vienen de Su corazón al nuestro para otras personas… Sus cuidados para con nosotros son uno de esos abrazos al día que agradecemos.

March is full of lessons, and this month’s letters are gimel and reish. Gimel stands for geshem which means rain and reish for raglayim which means feet. These Hebrew alphabet words continue to intertwine with our discipleship experiences…

We always say that as disciples we need to be Jesus’ hands and feet. Peace and justice initiatives are rooted in that principle. While in Nicaragua, we were honored to serve with those who were literally the hands and feet of Jesus in that beloved country. Rev. Dr. Gustavo Parajón is a Nicaraguan who left a legacy of service and public health ministry. He founded AMOS Health and Hope with David and Laura Parajón, where our colleague Christine Lafferty also serves.

Following the 1972 Managua earthquake, Don Gustavo also founded CEPAD, a major ecumenical relief and development agency. Our dear Damaris Albuquerque was Don Gustavo’s personal assistant for many years and eventually became the executive director of CEPAD until she retired in December 2020.

Our colleague Dan Buttry and our sister Damaris Albuquerque wrote the book “Healing the World: Gustavo Parajón, Public Health and Peacemaking Pioneer”. When we think about these peace and justice initiatives, and being the hands and feet of Jesus, we can only also think of rain and blessings as we hear about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which has become the Asbury University Revival (https://www.asbury.edu/outpouring/) and has swept to universities and seminaries across the USA, and even into other countries where God is present and revealing Himself to all who are willing to seek Him with a contrite heart. The Holy Spirit is empowering His people to go and be peacemakers that share His Gospel freely and lovingly…

May we all be renewed in our commitment to be His disciples and to serve our neighbors as Don Gustavo and so many others taught us. From women, youth, and children in Chile; to vulnerable women in Spain; to refugees in Nicaragua; to migrants and indigenous siblings in Colombia: our loving God is translated in loving our neighbors as ourselves. We learn, live out His Word, and teach it to others to do the same. Thanks for being part of His mission.

Watch for updates in our FB/Instagram pages and the FB group as we make our third trip to Puerto Rico (within this US/PR assignment year) for their annual sessions and to visit several churches along the way. March is a month of remembrance for Don Gustavo’s untimely parting on the 13^th of the month in 2011. We will always remember his advice to “give and receive at least 7 hugs per day”. Him being a physician and a loving pastor, it is advice we take to heart as it reminds us of how we too can heal the world, in Jesus’ name, through expressions of love that come from His heart to ours to others… Your care for us is one of those hugs a day for which we are deeply grateful.
