El legado de Carrie Perrine…

Como parte de nuestra ronda de visitas a la red en EE.UU.-Puerto Rico, en agosto tuvimos la bendición de visitar la PIB de Centralia, Illinois. Esta visita la orquestaron las hijas del pastor. Las conocimos en un retiro multirregional celebrado en Indiana en abril. A las niñas les gustó el sombrero con los pinches y conectamos en los momentos de comidas. Conectamos con la mamá a través de las hijas y así surgió la invitación para ser invitados a su “Culto de Romper las Jarras” que celebran anualmente para el apoyo de la iglesia a las misiones; este año fue su #143.

¿Qué es un “Culto de Romper las Jarras”, preguntas? Gracias por preguntar… Esta es una tradición anual única y con raíces profundas celebrada en esta iglesia desde el 1883. La señorita Carrie Perrine tenía un llamado misionero pero la oportunidad no cuajó para ella en aquel momento. Ella decidió que en lugar de ir, ella y sus estudiantes de escuela dominical recogerían monedas en jarras y las romperían anualmente para apoyar a misioneros que van. Año tras año la iglesia ha seguido haciéndolo. Se ha convertido en su forma sistemática de recaudar fondos para la misión doméstica e internacional. Es su manera de simbólicamente dar lo mejor de sí, incondicionalmente, al trabajo de Dios, como la mujer en Marcos 14:3 que rompió la jarra de alabastro y derramó el perfume costoso sobre la cabeza de Jesús…

Solo 3 años después que la señorita Perrine no pudo salir como misionera, las mujeres de la SMFBA enviaron a la Dra. Louise Celia “Lulu” Fleming en 1886. Lulu fue la primera mujer enviada a servir en el Congo (hoy día la República Democrática del Congo). Aunque murió en el 1899, su legado continúa así como el de la señorita Perrine; ¡mujeres pioneras en ir y en apoyar a quienes van en el mismo espíritu que Luther Rice apoyó a Adoniram y Ann Judson!

Visitar la PIB de Centralia fue una experiencia alentadora al ver el fervor y amor con que sus miembros traen sus jarras para ser rotas en el altar, una a una, con reverencia y admiración, dando gracias a Dios por Su provisión para Su misión. Las hijas del pastor traían las jarras al altar para ser rotas en presencia de la congregación. Después del culto, las nuevas jarras se distribuyeron para que la membresía comience su colecta para la ofrenda del próximo año y su nuevo “Culto de Romper las Jarras”.

Qué privilegio presenciar su fervor y compromiso con las misiones. Después del culto, disfrutamos un delicioso almuerzo, como buenos bautistas que somos; con abundancia en la comida y conversaciones alentadoras alrededor de las mesas. Gracias a que un simple sombrero con pinches de países donde hemos servido provocó la conexión con esta familia e iglesia de nuestra red…

También como parte de nuestras visitas, estuvimos en la PIB Hispana de Avon Park, Florida. Era el domingo de cierre de su aniversario #26 (comenzaron el mismo año que fuimos endosados, comisionados y enviados). Durante el culto, un cántico especial habló a nuestros corazones. Está basado en Éxodo 33:15 (RVC) donde Moisés dice, “Si tú no vas a venir conmigo, no nos saques de aquí”. Esa sigue siendo la súplica de nuestros corazones al embarcarnos en cada oportunidad de ministerio que se nos presenta; Su presencia siempre nos ha dirigido donde vamos. ¡Damos gracias al Señor!

En cuanto a la región de Iberoamérica y El Caribe, buscaremos Su presencia y dirección en unidad durante un retiro de 5 días, reunidos para orar y discernir con nuestros colegas los ministerios en estos próximos años como región y a nivel global.

En cuanto a sus BGs, extendemos la invitación a leer (o releer) las dos cartas anteriores que describen el ministerio desarrollado recientemente al otro lado del océano; durante las 9 semanas que estuvimos en España.

El Señor impactó a muchas personas a través de los materiales para encuentros de discipulado que les compartimos. Muchos discípulos siguen siendo discipulados para hacer discípulos en sus entornos.

Para que sus BGs respondamos a las invitaciones de seguir sirviendo en Colombia, Chile, Nicaragua y otros países de nuestra región (como lo hicimos y seguiremos haciendo en España), Su presencia debe dirigirnos. Tenemos planes y fechas tentativas para esos lugares que solo se podrán concretar si nuestras metas presupuestarias personalizadas se alcanzan al 100% a través de las ofrendas generosas de nuestra red; las Carrie Perrine y los Luther Rice del siglo XXI…

Así que, ¿cómo más sabemos que es Él quien dirige? Por Su provisión, por supuesto. Nos anima el testimonio de Carrie Perrine que apoyó a otros a ir cuando ella no pudo ir. Nos anima el cántico que nos recuerda que Él tiene que ser parte integral de nuestros viajes. Nos anima saber que contamos con una nube de testigos que sigue manteniendo nuestros brazos en alto como Aarón y Ur sostuvieron los de Moisés cuando desfallecía; el mismo Moisés que anhelaba que Su presencia lo guiara.

Este año, la Ofrenda Misionera Mundial se centra en Isaías 61:4, “Reconstruirán las ruinas antiguas y restaurarán los escombros de antaño; repararán las ciudades en ruinas y los escombros de muchas generaciones.” Hay ejemplos de nuestros colegas alrededor del mundo en formato accesible y descargable en ofrendamisioneramundial.org para compartir con su comunidad, según su conveniencia. Esta sigue siendo una ofrenda importante, especialmente cuando los fondos personalizados se quedan cortos; la OMM cubre la brecha para mantenernos sirviendo.

Si bien la OMM es vital para cubrir brechas ocasionales, cada unidad misionera debe asegurar compromisos mensuales consistentes durante su término de servicio. Nuestro término de 4 años actual continúa hasta junio 2030. Buscamos que Su presencia nos acompañe y dirija. Buscamos Su provisión este y cada año fiscal que comienza el 1ro de octubre—a través de cultos de romper las jarras, alcancías de pesetas, ofrendas en sobre y en línea que mes tras mes, trimestre tras trimestre, semestre tras semestre o año tras año nos dicen que podemos contar contigo para servir en coparticipación contigo y los socios en los países donde nos envía Él con un ministerio apoyado al 100%… ¿Serás parte de quienes coparticipan para alcanzar la meta al 100% durante estos 4 años de servicio? Nuestra gratitud es tan consistente como tu compromiso…

The Legacy of Carrie Perrine….

As part of our US/PR assignment to visit our network, earlier in August we were blessed to visit FBC Centralia, Illinois. This visit was orchestrated by the daughters of the pastor. We met at the multiregional retreat held in Indiana last April. The girls loved my hat with many pins and connected with me over meals. The mother and I connected through the daughters and the invitation surfaced to be their guest speaker for their annual “Jar Breaking Service” for this year’s church mission support, their 143rd.

What is the “Jar Breaking Service”, you may ask? We’re glad you asked… This is a deeply rooted and unique annual tradition held by the church since 1883. Miss Carrie Perrine had felt called to serve in missions, yet the opportunity didn’t open for her at the time. She decided that in lieu of her going, she and her Sunday school students would collect coins in jars and break them once a year to support other missionaries who go. Year after year this has been done, and it has become a systematic way for the church to raise funds for international and domestic missions. It is their way to symbolize giving their absolute best, unconditionally, to God’s work, like the woman in Mark 14:3 who broke an alabaster jar and poured the expensive perfume over Jesus’ head…

Only 3 years after Miss Perrine couldn’t go as a missionary, the Women’s ABFMS appointed the Dr. Louise Celia “Lulu” Fleming in 1886. Lulu became the first single female appointed to serve in the Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). Though she died in 1899, Miss Fleming’s legacy continues, as does Miss Perrine’s; pioneer women who go and who support those who go in the same spirit Luther Rice supported Adoniram and Ann Judson!

Being at FBC Centralia was a very encouraging experience. Seeing the fervor and love of the members who bring their jars to be broken at the altar, one by one, with reverence and awe, giving thanks to God for His provision for His mission. The pastor’s daughters would bring the jars to the altar to be broken in the presence of the congregation. Right after the service, new jars are distributed for members to start collecting their next year’s offering and a new “Jar Breaking Service”.

What a privilege to witness their fervor and commitment to missions. After the service, we all enjoyed a yummy potluck lunch, as the good Baptists we are; with plenty of food and good conversations around the tables. We are so grateful that a simple hat with pins from the countries we have served and been to, made the connection with this new family and church siblings in our network.

As part of our rounds of visits to the network, we went to FBC Hispanic Avon Park, Florida. That Sunday they were completing their anniversary #26 (they began the same year we were endorsed, commissioned and sent). During the service, one of the special songs truly spoke to our hearts. It is based on Exodus 33:15 which in The Message version Moses says, “If your presence doesn’t take the lead here, call this trip off right now”. This continues to be the cry of our hearts as we embark on each of the ministry opportunities set before us, and we are grateful that, thus far, His presence has led us to go.

As for the Iberoamerica and the Caribbean region, we will be seeking His presence together, meeting during a 5-day retreat with our regional colleagues to pray and discern these next years of ministry as a region and worldwide.

Many were impacted by the Lord through the discipleship encounter materials shared with them. Many disciples continue being discipled to make disciples in their own places.

For your BGs to respond to the standing invitations to continue serving in Colombia, Chile, Spain, Nicaragua, and other countries in our region (as we did and will continue doing in Spain), His presence needs to lead us. We have plans and tentative dates for each of those places that we will only be able to fulfill if our personalized support goal is 100% met through the generous giving of our network; the Carrie Perrine and the Luther Rice of the 21st century…

So, how else do we know if His presence is taking the lead? By His provision, indeed. We are encouraged by the testimony of those like Carrie Perrine who supported others to go when she couldn’t go herself. We are encouraged by the special song that reminds us that He needs to be part of our trips or better calling them off. We are encouraged to have such a cloud of witnesses that continue to hold our arms up like Aaron and Ur held Moses’ arms when he got weary; the same Moses who wanted His presence to take the lead.

This year’s World Mission Offering centers around Isaiah 61:4, “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations”. There are many examples from our colleagues around the world being highlighted in downloadable format at worldmissionoffering.org with materials you can access at your convenience to share with your own congregation. This continues to be a vital offering, especially when personalized support funding falls short; the WMO gifts fill the gap and keep global servants in ministry.

As vital as WMO gifts are to fill occasional gaps, securing monthly, consistent commitments for the duration of a term of service is essential for all of us. Our current term of 4 years of service continues through June 2030. We seek His presence to take the lead and covet His provision this and every fiscal year that starts on October 1st—through jar breaking services, quarter sheets piggy banks, envelopes, or online giving that month by month, quarter by quarter, semester by semester, or annually tells us that we can count on you to serve Him in partnership with you and those in the countries where He leads us with a 100% supported ministry… Will you be part of those partnering with us to reach that 100% goal for these next 4 years of service? Our gratitude is as consistent as your commitment…
