En septiembre hay muchas razones para celebrar… Aniversarios, cumpleaños y las Fiestas Patrias de Chile. Pensando en ello, la lección de discipulado de este mes se basa en las letras del alfabeto hebreo chet y samech. Chet con chatool que significa gato y samech con soos que significa caballo… Nos enfocaremos en samech-soos-caballo… Una frase que aprendimos en Chile es “no salgas como el caballo inglés”. En la vida tenemos comienzos que usualmente están llenos de sueños, esperanzas, fuerza y el deseo de éxito. Por la razón que sea, los chilenos acuñaron la frase “no salgas como el caballo inglés” pues es como cuando se abandona el esfuerzo, se deja algo a medias, sin terminar o con un final retrasado, lo que probaría que el ímpetu original fue abandonado por falta de planificación o por inconsistencia.

Filipenses 3:14 nos anima a seguir a la meta que va más allá de lo humano, al premio que Dios nos ofreció cuando nos llamó por medio de Cristo. Estamos en una carrera en cuerpos mortales enfrentando dificultades y tribulaciones con la promesa de que Él estará con nosotros siempre (Mateo 28:20b) mientras los enfrentamos en el cumplimiento de Su gran comisión. En vocabulario del siglo 21 decimos ser personas que perseveran, resilientes.

Vemos la resiliencia de muchas personas en Chile como Margarita, de quien les hemos hablado. La vemos en Vicky enseñando versículos bíblicos a la niñez de su preescolar para alimentar su vida espiritual desde temprano. La vemos en Lord Esteban (en la foto) pastoreando en Temuco por más de 20 años y enseñando la palabra de Dios. La vemos en éstos y muchos más a quienes conocemos desde que llegamos a Chile en septiembre del 2000, hemos seguido acompañando desde que salimos en el 2009 y vemos que siguen a la meta prometida por Dios por medio de Cristo.

Si no nos hubieran enviado a Chile en el 2000, no los habríamos conocido. Si no hubieran apoyado nuestro ministerio en Chile y los otros países donde servimos, no seríamos testigos de la obra de Dios en sus vidas y las nuestras. Si no siguieran apoyándonos, no podríamos estar en este nuevo término de servicio y preparándonos para viajar en persona a visitar nuestros socios. Pero, queremos evitar salir en este término como el caballo inglés. Necesitamos seguir a la meta del 100% de las promesas de apoyo.

Nuestro nivel de apoyo actual provee para lo básico (ver en la web). Necesitamos compromisos nuevos o aumentados para llegar al 100% y contar con los recursos para las necesidades del ministerio ahora que empezaremos a viajar por avión y en tierra. El trabajo de desarrollar materiales de discipulado continúa tras bastidores y pronto será visible cuando viajemos a compartirlo con nuestros socios. Para ello, les invitamos a colocarse en la brecha para poder seguir sirviendo a nuestros socios en Iberoamérica y El Caribe.

Chet está representada con chatool que significa gato. En la cultura popular decimos que los gatos tienen siete vidas. Nosotros solo una para decidir en qué equipo estamos. Estamos en Su equipo y cumplimos Su gran comisión. La gatita de Margarita, Nikki, nos enseñó paciencia y dedicación. No era fácil consentirla pero una vez nos ganamos su confianza, era muy amorosa.

En estos 23 años desde que salimos para Chile, mucho ha cambiado. Entre otros, incluye los cambios más recientes de nuestra creciente responsabilidad de levantar fondos para el ministerio. En todos estos años, seguimos hacia la meta, tanto humana como espiritualmente. Somos resilientes y estamos claros de cuál es el llamado que recibimos de Jesucristo. Vivimos agradecidos por la fidelidad de tantos como ustedes y por su apoyo en el pasado y el presente. Vivimos en gratitud por fe, confiando que Dios proveerá para que el ministerio continúe. ¿Será que conoce a alguien que podría invitar a unirse en apoyo a nuestro ministerio o será que pueda aumentar su propia ofrenda actual para apoyar estas necesidades del ministerio? ¿Será de quienes se asegurarán de que sigamos firmes en la carrera con los recursos necesarios para el ministerio? Oración + ánimo + ofrendas = 100%. No a medias, como el caballo inglés… Sigamos firmes hacia la meta con Jesucristo.

In September we have many reasons to celebrate! Anniversaries, birthdays, and Chile’s national holiday or Fiestas Patrias. Thinking of our Chilean siblings, this month’s discipleship lesson is based on the Hebrew alphabet letters chet and samech. Chet represented with chatool meaning cat and samech with soos meaning horse… We will start with samech-soos-horse… A phrase we learned in Chile is to “not start like an English horse.” Read more to learn what they mean…

In life we all have beginnings and most of them are filled with dreams, hopes, energy, and the desire to have success. For whatever reason, the Chileans coined the phrase to not start like an English horse because that would mean that the effort would be abandoned, unfinished, or with a delayed conclusion, proving that the original impetus was abandoned due to lack of planning or inconsistency.

Philippians 3:14 encourages us to press on toward the goal but it is a goal beyond our human realm, promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus. It implies that we are in a race while in our mortal bodies and that we can face trials and tribulations with the promise that He will be with us always (Matthew 28:20b) as we face them and fulfill His great commission. In 21^st century vocabulary we call people that persevere in this way, resilient.

We see the resilience of many in Chile like Margarita, of whom we have shared often. We see how Vicky teaches Bible verses to the children in her preschool which are nurturing their spiritual lives from an early age. We see how Lord Esteban (in the picture) continues pastoring in Temuco after more than 20 years still teaching God’s word to others. We see these and many more that we’ve known since we arrived in Chile in September of 2000, and we have continued journeying together, even after we left in 2009, still pressing toward the goal promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.

Had you not sent us to Chile in 2000, we wouldn’t have met these and others. Had you not supported our ministry in Chile and the other countries where we have served, we wouldn’t be witnesses of God’s work in their lives and ours. Had you not continued to support our ministry, we couldn’t be in this new term of service and planning our first in-person visits to our partners. Yet, we want to not start this term like an English horse. We need to press toward the goal with 100% of our pledged support.

Our current support level provides for our basic needs (see the web). We need new and increased giving toward our 100% to have the resources for our ministry needs as we begin traveling by air and by land. Developing the discipleship materials continues behind the scenes and will soon be visible as we are able to travel to our partners. To do so, we invite you to stand in the gap on our behalf so we may continue serving our partners in Iberoamerica and the Caribbean.

Chet stands for chatool which means cat. In folk culture we say that cats have nine lives. We only have one that we are given to decide which team we will be a part of. We are on God’s team and have a great commission to fulfill. Margarita’s cat Nikki taught us patience and dedication. She wasn’t easy to pet but once trust was earned, she could be quite soothing and loving.

In these 23 years since we left for Chile, lots has changed. Among others, it includes the more recent change making us more responsible for raising more portions of our own support. These many years later, we continue pressing toward the goal, both humanly and spiritually. We are resilient and are certain of the calling that is ours in Christ Jesus. We are grateful for the faithfulness of many like you in our past and present. We are grateful in faith, trusting that God will provide for this ministry to continue. Might you know someone who would like to join you in supporting our ministry, or might you yourself be able to increase your giving to support toward our ministry funds’ needs to continue this ministry? Will you be one seeing us continue the race with adequate resources for our ministry? Prayer + encouragement + giving = 100%. Not unfinished, like the English horse. Let us continue pressing toward the goals with Jesus Christ!
