«Let the children come to Me», «Youth, divine treasure», «Gray hair is a glorious crown»… A phrase for each season. As time goes by we need to be keenly aware of the importance of intergenerational integration, as planned by God for the body of Christ, where each step has a purpose and a lesson for all. Each person is important and has a place in the Kingdom of God.

In this brief meditation we invite you to see with tenderness the golden age, our population of elders. In the Baptist Churches of Puerto Rico we have a wide community of the golden age, many are part of the Ministry for the Senior Adult. It is one of the most activities segments among us, and their events are varied, from recreational events to the most profound Biblical reflections. For years now, they have been extending an active life for those who participate giving them relevance and acknowledgement.

Life goes on, and eventually youth become old. It is a fact of life. However, not everyone reaches the golden age. Some go before us during pregnancy, as babies, as children, during youth or young adulthood. With the current hardships in many families, workloads we’ve needed to face, have set elders to a second, third, or fourth degree of importance in our society. Programs designed to protect them are declining and elders are being stolen of their rights and needed protections.

Sadly, one of the recurring prayer needs for our pastoral calls is the situation our golden age population are living. Many are being abandoned in our island by relatives that leave seeking a better future, leaving their elders alone. Some leave them in hospitals; others leave them in nursing homes. Abandonment is in the rise, and it is a reality that affects our communities of faith and we need to take care of.

It would do us good to remember our grandfathers and grandmothers, uncles and aunts, biological and from our churches, those who pampered us, taught us, and gave us examples and testimony of the Christian life amid their multiple limitations. Those generations that would raise funds to build sanctuaries by selling bacalaítos and alcapurrias, pasteles and guanimes; many of those sanctuaries are still our places of worship. We remember those couples who would celebrate their golden anniversaries (50 years) and even reach the diamond (65 years and beyond), as they were serious about their marriage commitment and would keep the flame of love burning amid their difficulties and scarcity.

Those generations that didn’t have formal education yet memorized the Bible and hymns, and would go to the streets to share the Gospel in word and in action. The golden age of yesterday and today have lots to teach those of us as we start becoming part of them and those who will eventually also join it. May our hearts and minds be willing to continue learning and may we keep the newness and vitality that the childhood and the youth give us!

Let us accept the calling to embrace the golden age population with tenderness, love, and gratitude, valuing their contributions and caring for them as Jesus taught us. May we, as the Church, accept the challenge to integrate all of the generations, making sure that each person, regardless of their age, feels they have a place in the Kingdom of God. May we, at the end of our days, be able to reflect that tenderness and love we offered to those who preceded us.

Let us love each other and tenderly… hence we find the true essence of the body of Christ.

Hechos y Amor en Acción: BGsEtAl 2025Febrero; Vol. XXV Núm. 6; La ternura hecha vejez…

«Dejen que los niños venga a Mí», «Juventud, divino tesoro», «Corona de oro es la vejez»… para cada etapa, una frase. Cada vez debemos ser más conscientes de la importancia de la intergeneracionalidad, según el plan de Dios para el cuerpo de Cristo, donde cada etapa tiene un propósito y una enseñanza para todos. Toda persona es importante y tiene su lugar en el Reino de Dios.

En esta corta reflexión te invitamos a que con ternura veamos a la edad dorada, nuestra población vieja. En las Iglesias Bautistas de Puerto Rico contamos con una amplia comunidad de la edad dorada, la cual se integra al Ministerio del Adulto Mayor. Son uno de los colectivos más activos que tenemos, y sus actividades son variadas, desde la diversión hasta las más profundas reflexiones bíblicas. Por años, vienen extendiendo la vida activa de quienes lo conforman dándoles relevancia y reconocimiento.

La vida sigue su curso, y eventualmente la juventud se convierte en vejez. Es la ley de la vida. Sin embargo, no toda persona llega a la edad dorada. Algunas se nos adelantan desde el embarazo, recién nacidos, en la niñez, la juventud o adultez temprana. Con el deterioro actual en muchas familias, el ajoro laboral al que nos hemos visto abocados, la vejez ha quedado relegada a un segundo, tercer o cuarto plano en nuestra sociedad. Los programas diseñados para protegerles van en deterioro y le roban a la vejez derechos y protecciones que necesitan.

Tristemente, uno de los motivos de oración más frecuentes en nuestra pastoral es la situación de la población de la edad dorada. Muchos están siendo abandonados en nuestra isla por familiares que parten en busca de un futuro mejor, dejando a sus viejos y viejas solos. Algunos son dejados en hospitales, otros en hogares de ancianos. El abandono está en aumento y es una realidad que afecta nuestras comunidades de fe y nos compete atender.

Bien nos vendría recordar a nuestros abuelos y abuelas, tíos y tías, tanto biológicos como los de la iglesia, quienes nos alcahueteaban, enseñaban y daban ejemplo y testimonio de la vida cristiana en medio de múltiples limitaciones. Aquellas generaciones que a punta de ventas de bacalaítos y alcapurrias, pasteles y guanimes, recaudaron fondos para construir muchos de los templos que todavía hoy son nuestros lugares de adoración. Recordemos aquellos matrimonios que celebraban sus aniversarios de oro (50 años) y llegaban incluso a los de diamante (65 años en adelante), pues tomaban en serio el compromiso matrimonial y mantenían la llama del amor ardiendo en medio de las dificultades y la escasez.

Aquella generación que sin educación formal aprendía de memoria la Biblia y los himnos, y salía a la calle a compartir el Evangelio en palabra y en acción. La vejez de ayer y la de hoy tienen mucho que enseñarnos a quienes ya estamos uniéndonos a ella y quienes vendrán. ¡Qué mantengamos corazones y mentes dispuestos a seguir aprendiendo, y que conservemos la frescura y vitalidad que la niñez y la juventud nos imparten!

Aceptemos el llamado a abrazar la población de la edad dorada con ternura, amor y gratitud, valorando sus contribuciones y cuidando de ellos tal como Jesús nos enseñó. Que como Iglesia, asumamos el desafío de integrar a todas las generaciones, asegurándonos de que cada persona, sin importar su edad, sienta que tiene un lugar en el Reino de Dios. Que, al final de nuestros días, podamos reflejar esa misma ternura y amor que ofrecimos a aquellos que nos precedieron.

Amémonos mutuamente y con ternura… en ello se encuentra la verdadera esencia del cuerpo de Cristo.
