Daled – Koof…

April is a month full of events, travels, and lessons. This month’s letters are daled and koof. Daled stands for degel which means flag and koof for koofsah which means box. We continue learning from the Hebrew alphabet and their interaction with our discipleship encounters…

Last month, when we talked about the 7 hugs a day from don Gustavo Parajón, we had no idea we would be receiving more than that quota for the rest of the month. In a matter of weeks, we went from the joy of celebrating Papi’s 88th birthday to saying farewell to don Pedro Jaime Giovanetti Román…

In that experience, our two words of the month are intertwined. Papi was a servant since his youth, and through his preaching I accepted the Lord as my Savior on that Good Friday of 1972. Papi taught us to raise the Lord’s flag wherever we were so others would know Jesus. In his intense and humble style, his ashes were in a simple wooden box. Through his life and death, we continue learning the importance of humility and meekness.

As we raise Jesus’ flag, we are called to continue nurturing peace and justice initiatives. This month of April we continue working with the Racial Justice Committee within our mission society during a retreat in Alabama. We covet your prayers as we discern how to implement the fifteen resolves of the resolution adopted by the board of directors on November 17, 2020. The impact of this resolution will bring blessing to our immediate family of global servants, colleagues in the office and board directors, as well as churches and regions in the USA and Puerto Rico, with an extended impact in the more than seventy countries where we all serve.

As we think about the box, we pause to think about that final week of our Lord Jesus Christ, His entrance, His time of intimacy with His disciples around the table, His death on the cross, His burial, and His resurrection. He didn’t have a place to rest His head, yet the Father provided a place for the three days it was needed. He didn’t have a box like we have nowadays, but the symbol teaches us the humbleness and meekness that are staples of Jesus’ flag when we serve His people.

In Colombia, we continue supporting from afar the migrant communities from Venezuela traveling through Cúcuta. Both Pastor Luis Eberto and his wife Ingrid as well as Pastor Francisco and his wife Eneida, work hand in hand from each of their congregations to care for the physical and spiritual needs of these migrants as they pass through Colombia. Their challenges have not ceased: they need our prayers, accompaniment, and support.

We continue to share about them, the Wayuu, our discipleship encounters, and much more in our last quarter of deputation visits during the US/PR assignment. Right after Alabama comes New England (Connecticut and Rhode Island) where we’ll have opportunities to catch up with you in person. If you’d like details, let us know and we’ll send the specifics.

May this Holy Week be an opportunity to reflect on the great love of Jesus for you and for us. May we invite others to receive the gift of salvation which Jesus paid for in advance. May we boldly and with much joy share with those who are yet to hear the good news, the blessing we have of abundant and eternal life.

Although we are sad for the physical separation, there is much peace and hope because the Lord and Savior that Papi introduced me to as a child, is the same Who called him to His presence and Who promised me we’ll see each other again. And meanwhile, I rejoice to know that Papi has no more illness, pain, or sadness. In His presence there is fullness of joy! Hence, we raise the flag of Jesus and adhere to the humbleness and meekness of a box that holds the dust from he who began as dust and now has eternal life with God.

Daled – Koof…

Abril es un mes lleno de eventos, viajes y lecciones. Las letras de este mes son daled y koof. Daled representa a degel que significa bandera y koof a koofsah que significa caja. Seguimos aprendiendo del alfabeto hebreo y su interacción con nuestras experiencias de discipulado…

Cuando el mes pasado hablamos de los 7 abrazos al día de don Gustavo Parajón, ni nos imaginábamos que estaríamos recibiendo más de la cuota por el resto del mes. Es que en asunto de semanas, pasamos de la alegría de celebrar los 88 de Papi, don Pedro Jaime Giovanetti Román, a decirle hasta luego…

En esa experiencia se entrelazan nuestras dos palabras del mes. Papi fue un siervo desde su juventud, y a través de su predicación acepté al Señor como mi Salvador en aquel viernes santo del 1972. Papi nos enseñó a alzar la bandera del Señor donde estuviéramos para que más personas conocieran a Jesús. En su estilo intenso pero humilde, sus cenizas estuvieron en una caja simple de madera. Tanto en la vida como en la muerte, seguimos aprendiendo la importancia de la humildad y la sencillez.

Al alzar la bandera de Jesús, tenemos el llamado a seguir promoviendo iniciativas de paz y justicia. Este mes de abril continuaremos los trabajos del comité de justicia racial de Ministerios Internacionales a través de un retiro en Alabama. Agradecemos sus oraciones en el proceso de discernir cómo poner en práctica los quince resuelves de la resolución del 17 de noviembre del 2020 que adoptó la junta de directores. El impacto de esta resolución traerá bendición a nuestra familia inmediata de servidoras y servidores globales, colegas en la oficina y la junta, así como las iglesias y regiones en EE.UU. y Puerto Rico y el impacto por extensión en los más de setenta países donde estamos sirviendo.

Al pensar en la caja, hacemos un alto para pensar en la semana final de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Su entrada, Su tiempo de intimidad con Sus discípulas y discípulos alrededor de la mesa, Su muerte en la cruz, Su entierro y Su resurrección. Él no tenía dónde reposar Su cabeza mas el Padre proveyó un lugar por los tres días que fue necesario. No tuvo una caja como las que tenemos hoy en día, pero el simbolismo nos enseña que la humildad y la sencillez son parte de esa bandera de Jesús cuando servimos a Su pueblo.

En Colombia, continuamos apoyando desde la distancia a las poblaciones de migrantes de Venezuela que transitan a través de Cúcuta. Tanto el Pastor Luis Eberto y su esposa Ingrid como el Pastor Francisco y su esposa Eneida, trabajan mano a mano desde sus congregaciones para atender las necesidades físicas y espirituales de quienes migran a través de Colombia. Los desafíos no han cesado: necesitan de nuestras oraciones, acompañamiento y apoyo.

De ellos, de los Wayuu, de los encuentros de discipulado y mucho más seguimos compartiendo en las visitas del año de transición. Después de Alabama seguimos a New England (Connecticut y Rhode Island) donde hay oportunidad para ponerles al día en persona. Si quieren detalles, déjenos saber para darle los específicos.

Que esta Semana Santa sea una oportunidad para reflexionar en el gran amor de Jesús para ti y para mí. Que podamos invitar a otras personas a hacer suyo el regalo de salvación que Jesús ya pagó por adelantado. Que con denuedo y mucho gozo compartamos la bendición que tenemos de vida plena y eterna con quienes todavía no han oído la buena noticia.

Aunque hay tristeza por la separación física, hay mucha paz y esperanza porque el Señor y Salvador que Papi me presentó en mi niñez es Quien lo llamó a Su presencia y Quien me prometió que nos volveríamos a ver. Y mientras ese día llega, me gozo en saber que Papi ya no tiene enfermedad, dolor ni tristeza. ¡En Su presencia hay plenitud de gozo! Por eso alzamos la bandera de Jesús y nos adherimos a la humildad y sencillez de la caja que alberga el polvo de quien comenzó como polvo y ahora tiene vida eterna con Dios.
