GoalThe goal of this project is to provide an education to children and young adults in the Mekong region of Thailand.
SummaryThis project seeks to raise $5,882 annually in order to educate 30 children in the Mekong region of Thailand.
DescriptionSTEP is the Student Tuition Expense Program that supports underprivileged children and youth by addressing various educational necessities such as tuition fees, educational materials, uniforms, transportation expenses, and, where necessary, accommodation and meal costs. By giving children access to an education, it broadens their perspectives enabling them to make informed choices beyond their current constrained circumstances. An education empowers students to explore the variety of life paths, enhances their prospects for employment and ultimately contributes to their family’s financial stability and quality of life. Established in 2001-02 as STEP Thailand before expanding its scope to encompass the Mekong region, this program was founded to cater to the evident needs of children, particularly among ethnic minority groups in northern Thailand and neighboring areas. Financial assistance is allocated based on individual circumstances, including family background, number of siblings, financial constraints, and personal aspirations. Each beneficiary undergoes a thorough screening process to ensure tailored support according to their specific needs and goals. STEP Mekong offers educational opportunities, whether academic or vocational. Student will get a solid foundation upon which to shape their futures. Integral to this aspiration is the provision of support as they navigate through challenges and uncertainties. Over the past 18 years, many children who have been assisted were empowered to opt out of paths leading to prostitution, school dropout, early parenthood, or substance abuse, often influenced by peer groups lacking aspirations for a better future. Primarily, young people in the Mekong region aim to support their families, thereby positively impacting their communities. STEP endeavors to instill hope where it is scarce and help those in the program grow in their understanding of God’s role in their lives. Today, STEP-Mekong celebrates the achievement of college graduates who were once beneficiaries of this program. The project total cost is $17647 over 3 years, or $5,882 per year.
