Keeping Silent Before Him
“But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”
Habakkuk 2:20 NLT
Greeting from Qonce, South Africa,
The Lord has been tugging at my heart to stay silent before Him. I have a morning prayer and devotional time with the Lord daily, but He is saying, “Even in the busiest of your day, keep silent before Me. When you are confronting difficult things, keep silent before Me! In your alone time, keep silent before Me!” It seems like an impossible thing to do. God always calls us to what is impossible for us but never impossible for Him. Habakkuk 2:20, “But the Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him.”, is the call to worship on Sunday mornings in my home church Trinity Baptist Church of Los Angeles. I have heard and read this scripture for many years, “So what are you saying to me now Lord?”
When I read all of Habakkuk chapter two, Habakkuk is keeping silent before God and listening to God after complaining to God. God tells me through this scripture, “Your idols (anything you put your trust in apart from God) cannot save you or teach you. You must live by my Faith.” The Lord is replying to my complaints by telling me who He is in any situation. So, I must keep silent because God is in His holy temple. The Holy Spirit is living inside me. The Holy Spirit is speaking and when I am not silent before Him, I am out of step with the Holy Spirit. Keeping silent shows me how to agree with God, how to surrender to God and how to obey God. I am so grateful also for how God puts the right people at the right time in my life to help me to keep silent before Him.
My students notice the posture of staying silent before the Lord because I am asking the Lord to show me how to teach my students. Keeping silent before the Lord brings about a calming effect on my students who want to talk a lot and can’t sit still. They work in groups which allow them to talk and help each other. As I work daily with autistic children and children with learning disability in Grades R to nine the Lord shows me how to help the students comprehend certain math topics. Staying silent before the Lord brings about greater understanding of needs of each of my students.
