GoalThe goal of this project is to develop strategies, provide training and increase understanding about responsible care for natural resources and native people’s rights in Latin America.
SummaryThis project seeks to raise $9,000 annually in order to develop strategies and training about the need to protect the environment in Central America from those who seek to exploit the people, the land and water.
DescriptionThe Christian Continental Network for Peace (RECONPAZ) is a Latin American, continental movement of 8 countries inspired by faith that lives out the Kingdom-values of justice, peace, active non-violence, love, and solidarity by accompanying, investigating, advocating, and developing actions around environmental justice. RECONPAZ wants to assist communities seeking to serve as guardians of creation. Specific activities of this project include: • Training: Develop training for community and church leaders to engage in workshops, seminars, and courses around creation care and educational models for peace. • Advocacy: Influence those who must be guarantors of human and nature rights to fulfill their responsibility. Form the People’s Court to present cases of rights violations. Provide legal services to advise communities in defending their environmental causes and presenting communications and cases before the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal, human rights organizations, and relevant agencies. Organize a Divestment Campaign to encourage organizations of faith or with social purposes to divest their holdings in companies with practices that are extractive and do intentional harm to communities in exchange for profit. • Networking: Establish intersectoral agendas among those who make up the network and with other actors to strengthen the management commitment in defense of all creation. • Research and Analysis: Collect the stories of community resistance and document the violations of the States and companies against the collective rights of the people and nature. Build knowledge that allows us to qualify our commitment to the defense of creation. • Communication: Produce educational and outreach materials that share the voices of communities that defend creation. Print, virtual, website, and social media platforms will be used. The project total cost is $27,000 over 3 years, or $9,000 per year.
Suggested GiftsA gift of $500 will pay for a media campaign to call for divestment by faith and social organization in companies doing intention harm in exchange for profit. A gift of $1,000 will provide 10 scholarships for individuals to attend a course offered by the training school. A $5,000 donation will cover investigation of human rights violations and legal services to present cases before the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal, human rights organizations, and relevant agencies.
Prayer RequestsPray that people will embrace RECONPAZ’s value of ecological conversion – moving away from consumerism to a simpler way of living that is responsible and respectful. Pray that RECONPAZ will be able to influence those who must be guarantors of human rights and nature rights so that they fulfill their responsibilities. Pray that RECONPAZ will achieve equitable gender relations that are consistent with the principles and commitments to peace and justice for the local people.
