Update on trips to refugee camps on Thai-Burma border

February 8, 2008 Journal

I am writing this message from Thailand. Marcia and I arrived January 22 and attended team meetings with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. After that meeting we had the opportunity to take several from CBF for a quick visit to the Mae La refugee camp. One person on this trip was Rob Nash, global mission coordinator for CBF. If you would like to see his impressions on the visit you can visit his blog at and look for the Feb. 4 entry.

Since then we've been connecting with Karen and others in the Chiang Mai area and checking on the details for the visit of a number of leaders from the American Baptist Churches, several pastors with new Karen congregations and some others that have been working with resettlement agencies in the US. Included in this group are Roy Medley, general secretary of the American Baptist Churches USA, and Florence Li, Ken George and Richard Harrris from National Ministries. Representing American Baptist Women is Sandra Hasenauer. To see more about the trip, who is going and why, look at the blog that has been started at: Follow the progress of the trip as we are able to post updates.

Marcia has already returned to the US. It was a lengthy trip as she got stranded by the recent bad weather in Chicago and had to spend the night. But she is home in Ohio now safe and sound so we praise God for that.

For me (Duane) it is likely I will be slow to respond to e-mail for the next couple weeks but Marica will be filling the void as she can.

We appreciate your prayers especially as the group of visitors travel here and throughout our journeys within Thailand. There is so much to see, learn, and experience. We pray the trip will be productive for all.
