Mexico Mission Team of First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines IA

November 1, 2009 Journal

The mission committee of First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines IA set a goal in late 2008 to sponsor an international mission trip for members of their church.  They partnered with their region, Mid-American Baptist Churches, to provide leadership through Rev. Soozi Whitten Ford and Jan Grogan.  Grogan chairs the church’s mission committee and, along with Ford, this was the fifth mission team they have co-led to Deborah’s House in Tijuana since 2004.  Deborah’s House is a ministry to women and their families who have experienced violence in their lives, and is supported by missionaries Ray and Adalia Schellinger.

The team of eight mixed cement for exterior stucco, assisted with the roof on the second story of the shelter, with framing and the installation of windows.  In addition, they worked to bring power to the sewing workshop room by digging a trench to bury electrical cable which had to be threaded through a PVC pipe; attaching wiring to the power source and then connecting the power to outlets and light fixtures in the room.

While the team was very involved in many physical tasks, their most important work was building relationships with the women and children of Deborah’s House.  Much laughter, love and compassion was exchanged throughout the week, in spite of not knowing each other’s language, and they were honored when a former resident invited them to celebrate her baby’s dedication in her new home.
