MISSIONARY LETTER ON THE SITUATION IN GUATEMALA

¹⁴ The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:1,14

The God of life inserted himself into the feeling and heartbeat of humanity. This is the intention of the RECONPAZ missionary immersion program: to bring delegations closer to the hearts of the people who struggle, so that they can feel and come together with their brokenness and their aspirations for justice.

A delegation of leaders from International Ministries, the United Evangelical Churches of Puerto Rico and the continental RECONPAZ countries, between September and October 2023, went to three Central American countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras). We got to know each country through a forum for analyzing reality, a visit to a community that is guardian of creation, and by touring the country.

I share with you the incarnational pilgrimage of the delegation with the Guatemalan people.

GUATEMALA

Analysis and Conversation

We hear.

Six historical moments that show the ups and downs of Guatemalan national leaders and policies.

The analyst and the resistance leaders said a lot about the long history of oppression and the forceful resistance of the Guatemalan people. Here is a glimpse of what was said:

The government and the military, at the service of enthroned elites, abused indigenous peoples and impoverished peasants, expropriating their land and forcing them to work in exploitative conditions, theft, and plunder, always for the benefit of others.

The strength of the Guatemalan people for a just order was overwhelming despite the power-controlling elites overthrew the governments of Juan José Arévalo and Jacobo Árbenz (1944 to 1954) and imposed military dictatorships, and the war.

We hear voices that encourage life and that accompany the Continental Christian Network for Peace (RECONPAZ) and the Christian Ecumenical Council of Guatemala:

• The q’eq’echies who in the departments of Alta and Baja Verapaz recover, through legal means, their ancestral lands with property titles dating back to colonial times.
• The organized Xinca people who defend nature against Canadian mining in the east of the country.
• The youth of the resistance with the Ecumenical Council, from faith with the arts, defend creation.

The delegation, in Guatemala, heard the heartbeat of the people.

We feel.

The Canadian mining company that illegally extracts silver in Xinca territory.

The next day, the delegation went to the Xinca territory, and there, they felt, firsthand, the pain caused by the Canadian company Pan American Silver that, illegally, settled in the municipality of San Rafael Las Flores.

We feel in the tears of a young girl the anguish of seeing her territory divided into two sides.

On the one hand, there are those of us who take care of the common goods:

• The young scientists, guardians of the forest, the Xinca Parliament and the church, who, together, achieved that the Constitutional Court of Guatemala ordered the cessation of operations of this company until the people are consulted whether their territory wants it or not.
• We, the young people, who monitor the volume and quality of water from springs, to show that silver extraction pollutes the water with arsenic and makes people sick.
• Those of us who install in communities in resistance lacking water, rain harvesting systems.
• Those of us who ask for financial disinvestment in extractive companies that murder our Sister and Mother Earth.

While, on the other hand, there is the company that destroys Mother Earth and makes people sick. “My dad”-the young girl told us- “one of the many, got sick with cancer. He healed and dedicated himself to taking care of the mountain and the springs, but this company does not let us live in peace. Even though we are preparing the consultation, the company continues to intimidate and criminalize the people.

The delegation felt the impact of the oppression and strength of this young girl, her father, and this community guardian of creation.

Truncated tourism agenda

We act.

If hearing the people and feeling with them had been everything for the delegation, it would have been fine; in fact, the immersion was planned to achieve that rapport.

The last day was just to enjoy the admirable beauty of Lake Atitlán and Antigua, but divine grace reached us and, as it took hold of Mary to conceive, in the turbulent times that Guatemala is experiencing, it moved the delegation to action, a simple but transcendent gesture.

On the very day of touristing, the Guatemalan people blocked all access roads to the capital and took to the streets to demand respect for democracy.

The elite enthroned in power opposes giving up control of State institutions. Bernardo Arévalo Bermejo, son of the man who was president in 1944, surprisingly won the presidency of the republic with an overwhelming majority of votes and must begin his presidential term on January 14, 2024, but this elite does not want to let him assume the presidency.

• The Public Ministry (MP) seized the minutes of the first and second rounds of the elections.
• Congress and the Supreme Court of Justice want to withdraw the immunity of the judges of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the president-elect and his vice president, to annul the electoral results, already validated and made official.
• These bodies issue arrest warrants against leaders who express opposition.
• They ignore the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, the Organization of American States (OAS), all entities that have expressed their alarm that a small group has kidnapped the Guatemalan State.

Our delegation came across this agonizing situation in the country and, admirably, chose, instead of sightseeing, to go to the sit-in in front of the MP to express to the Guatemalan people its international solidarity, and pray with them, imploring there that God would “let justice roll down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream”. (Amos 5:24).

The delegation immersed itself in Guatemala’s desire for peace and acted.

Let’s incarnate!

Hearing, feeling and acting: that is where incarnation goes:

You must get inside to see, in depth, the origin of evil.

You must reach out and let yourself be touched by those who are hurt by evil.

You must move to be,

With the people who long for the Prince of peace.

With the Creator who becomes human, they seek peace.

May there be in us the same feeling that was in Christ Jesus…

He, who is God…,

He emptied himself…

Empty yourself!

Unite with the people who fight.

These words capture our journey, and, with them, I give you my Christmas hug; my hug also goes to the delegation that heard, felt, and acted.

CARTA MISIONERA SOBRE LA SITUACIÓN EN GUATEMALA

En el principio ya existía la Palabra; y aquel que es la Palabra estaba con Dios y era Dios…

Aquel que es la Palabra se hizo hombre y vivió entre nosotros. Y hemos visto su gloria, la gloria que recibió del Padre, por ser su Hijo único, abundante en amor y verdad.

Juan 1:1, 14 – Dios Habla Hoy

El Dios de la vida se insertó en el sentir y el latir de la humanidad. Eso intención quiere lograr el programa de inmersiones misionales de RECONPAZ: acercar delegaciones al corazón de los pueblos que luchan, para que palpen y se fundan con sus quebrantos y sus anhelos de justicia.

Una delegación de líderes provenientes de Ministerios Internacionales, de las Iglesias Evangélicas Unidas de Puerto Rico y de la RECONPAZ continental y de los países, entre septiembre y octubre 2023, fuimos a tres países de Centroamérica (El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras). Nos compenetramos en cada país a través de un foro de análisis de la realidad, de una visita a una comunidad guardiana de la creación y de una oportunidad de turistear en el país.

Les comparto lo que fue el peregrinaje encarnacional de la delegación con el pueblo guatemalteco.

Oímos

Seis momentos históricos que evidencian los vaivenes de los líderes y las políticas nacionales guatemaltecas.

Mucho dijeron el analista y los líderes de las resistencias sobre la larga historia de opresión y la contundente resistencia del pueblo de pueblo guatemalteco. Aquí una pisca de lo dicho:

El gobierno y los militares, al servicio de élites entronadas, abusaron a los pueblos originarios y de los campesinos empobrecidos, expropiándoles de tierras y forzándolos a trabajar en condiciones de explotación; robo y la rapiña, siempre para el provecho de otros.

Aunque las élites controladoras del poder derrocaron los gobiernos de Juan José Arévalo y de Jacobo Árbenz (1944 al 1954) e impusieron dictaduras militares, y la guerra, en esa década, contundente fue la fuerza del pueblo por un orden justo.

Oímos voces que alientan vida y que acompañan la Red Continental Cristiana por la Paz (RECONPAZ) y el Concejo Ecuménico Cristiano de Guatemala:

• Los q´eq´echies que en los departamentos de Alta y Baja Verapaz recuperan, por la vía legal, sus tierras ancestrales con títulos de propiedad que datan de los tiempos de la colonia.
• El pueblo xinca organizado que defiende la naturaleza contra una minería canadiense en el oriente del país.
• Las juventudes de las resistencias con el Concejo Ecuménico, desde la fe con las artes defienden la creación.

La delegación, en Guatemala, oyó el latir del pueblo.

Sentimos

La minera canadiense que ilegalmente extrae plata en el territorio xinca.

Al siguiente día, la delegación fue al territorio xinca, y ahí, sintió, en carne viva, el dolor que produce la empresa canadiense Pan American Silver que, ilegalmente, se instaló en el municipio San Rafael Las Flores.

Sentimos en las lágrimas de una jovencita la angustia de ver su territorio dividido en dos bandos.

Por un lado, estamos los que cuidamos los bienes comunes:

• Los jóvenes científicos, guardianes del bosque, el Parlamento Xinca y la iglesia, que, unidos logramos que la Corte Constitucional de Guatemala ordenase el cese operaciones de esta la empresa hasta que se consulte al pueblo si la quiere o no su territorio.
• Los jóvenes que monitoreamos el volumen y calidad del agua de los manantiales de agua, para mostrar que la extracción de plata contamina el agua con arsénico y enferma a la gente.
• Los que instalamos en las comunidades en resistencia, sin agua, sistemas de cosechas de lluvia.
• Los que pedimos la desinversión financiera en empresas extractivas que asesinan de nuestra Hermana y Madre Tierra.

Mientras que, por el otro lado, está la empresa que destruye a la Madre Tierra y enferma a las gentes. Mi papá, uno de los tantos, enfermó de cáncer. Curó y se entregó a cuidar la montaña y los manantiales, pero esta empresa no nos deja en paz. A pesar de que estamos preparando la consulta, la empresa sigue intimidando, criminalizando y asesinando al pueblo.

La delegación sintió el impacto de la opresión y la fuerza de esta joven, de su papá y de esta comunidad guardiana de la creación.

Truncada agenda de turismo

Actuamos

Si oír al pueblo y sentir con él hubiese sido todo para la delegación, hubiera estado bien; de hecho, la inmersión se planeó para lograr esa compenetración.

El último día era, nomás, para disfrutar la admirable belleza del lago de Atitlán y Antigua, pero la gracia divina nos alcanzó y, como se apoderó de María para concebir, en el turbio tiempo que vive Guatemala, movió la delegación a la acción, un gesto simple, pero trascendentes.

El mero día de turistear el pueblo guatemalteco bloqueó todas las vías de acceso a la capital y salió a las calles para exigir el respeto a la democracia.

La élite entronada en el poder se opone a ceder el control de las instituciones del Estado.  Bernardo Arévalo Bermejo, hijo del que fue presidente en 1944, sorpresivamente, ganó la presidencia de la república con una abrumadora mayoría de votos y debe iniciar su mandato presidencial el 14 de enero de 2024, pero no quieren dejarlo que asuma la presidencia.

• El Ministerio Público (MP) secuestró las actas de la primera y segunda ronda de las elecciones.
• El Congreso y la Corte Suprema de Justicia quieren retirarles la inmunidad a los magistrados del Tribunal Supremo Electoral y al presidente electo y a su vicepresidenta, con el fin de anular los resultados electorales, ya validados y oficializados.
• Estos órganos dictan órdenes de arresto contra líderes que manifiestan oposición. Desoyen a las Naciones Unidas ONU, a los Estados Unidos, a la Unión Europea, a la Organización de Estados Americanos OEA, entidades todas que han manifestado su alarma de que un pequeño grupo tenga secuestrado al Estado guatemalteco.

Nuestra delegación se topó con esta agónica coyuntura del país y, admirablemente, optó, en vez de turistear, por ir al plantón ante el MP para expresarle al pueblo guatemalteco su solidaridad internacional, y orar con ellos, implorando allí que Dios haga que “fluya el derecho como agua y la justicia como un río inagotable” (Amos 5:24).

La delegación se sumergió en el anhelo de paz de Guatemala, y actuó.

Encarnémonos

Oír, sentir y actuar: por ahí va la encarnación:

Hay que meterse para ver, con profundidad, el origen del mal.

Hay que llegar y dejarse tocar por los que el mal lastima.

Hay que moverse para estar,

Con el pueblo que anhela al Príncipe de la paz.

Con el Creador que se hace humano con los buscan la paz.

Que haya en nosotros el mismo sentir que hubo en Cristo Jesús…

Él, cual siendo Dios…,
se despojó…

¡Despójate!

Únete con los pueblos que luchan.

Estas palabras recogen nuestro andar y, con ellas, te doy mi abrazo de navidad; para la delegación que oyó, sintió y actuó, también, va mi abrazo.
