Rev. David Ngai is the senior pastor of the Kwun Tong Swatow Baptist Church, and Mr. Tony So is the executive secretary. They happily shared with me that their new church construction is making good progress. With the strong support of its members, the church has invested HK$80 million (US$10.32 million) in the project so far. They still need to raise HK$40 million (US$5.16 million) to finish the construction. They are looking for donations as well as a no- or low-interest loan.

David proudly shared, “Our church members are mostly grassroots and middle-class people. They have given to the new church building project sacrificially. Some have even applied for mortgage credit loans to give!”

Despite this huge financial challenge, they trust God that they will move into the new church building in 2016. The new facility will enable the church to expand its services to not only members and the Kwun Tong community, but also to new ministries like an English worship service, outreach to migrants and workers from other Asian countries, and an urban mission training institute. David is requesting that IM send a missionary or missionary couple to help them develop these new ministries.

David received a leadership development grant from IM to study in the M. Div. program of the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a disciple of Dr. Ray Bakke, and has become a pioneer urban mission advocate in Hong Kong. He started the Shun Tin Swatow Baptist Church and Social Center and then became the General Secretary of World Vision in China and Hong Kong. David was invited to revive the Kwun Tong Swatow Baptist Church, which continues to serve the grassroots community of Kwun Tong.
