On May 21, IM celebrates 212 Years of Global Mission!

Each May, I find myself reflecting on those who first gathered to form our mission society in 1814. Thirty-three delegates came from across the young United States, making a bold and costly decision. They chose to come together “in one sacred effort” to participate in God’s mission outside of their own communities.

This was no small step!

In a time marked by geographical distance, limited resources, and theological differences, cooperation required courage. However, their shared conviction to make disciples of all nations was greater than the obstacles they faced.

From the earliest days, American Baptists encountered hardship and opposition. They sacrificed financial security and endured persecution for their beliefs. Many who answered the call faced sickness, grief, and even lost their lives. Yet, they moved forward, believing God had entrusted them with a responsibility that could not be ignored.

More than two centuries later, that same call remains.

While the landscape and context of global mission may have changed, the need for courage and steadfastness has not. To a world filled with uncertainty, hardship, division and deep need, we are called to embody the gospel of Jesus Christ. Like those who came before us, we are asked to step beyond what is familiar.

Their courage laid the foundation. 212 years later, our courage sustains the movement.

IM global servants continue to build partnerships and proclaim the Good News in both word and deed across cultures.

This summer, we have a special opportunity to gather again as a global community at the World Mission Conference. We’ll celebrate what God has done and look ahead with hope as God continues to write IM’s story, remembering that God’s mission always requires faith in action.

I pray you will join us in Orlando, Florida, this July, for a wonderful time of connection and shared purpose.

We praise God for you and thank you for your invaluable partnership!

Together with you in mission,

Rev. Dr. Sharon T. Koh
