UNDERSTANDING HOW EDUCATION EVOLVES FOR MY STUDENTS

It has been quite a while since my last update to you all. I pray your Winter season was restful and Spring has brought many blessings and new beginnings.
As the seasons have changed and many holidays have come and gone, I have beenĀ reflecting with gratitude on how God has allowed me to witness the fruit of my ministry.

When I first arrived in Budapest, very few people outside of the city center spoke English with confidence or fluency. However, it was clear the schools and government were committed to youth learning English.

My school, which was formerly a primary school and now also offers education through high school, is a school dedicated to teaching English to its students. The children began learning English in first grade. Until this year, I really didn’t understand or know the next steps in their language journey. This winter was different for me. I had the privilege of attending the high school fair alongside leadership from our school.

UNDERSTANDING HOW EDUCATION EVOLVES FOR MY STUDENTS

The Hungarian high school fair is very similar and equivalent to an American college fair. Each high school participates in multiple fairs to showcase their school and the unique opportunities offered. Twenty-five to fifty schools attend these events that attract eighth-grade students along with their homeroom teacher. The students pass from booth to booth, hearing presentations and collecting information. The students take the information home to discuss with their parents. Once the family selects the schools that they are interested in, then interviews and appointments to attend open lessons are scheduled.

I also learned that students must be accepted into the high school and acceptance is based on a point system. The school determines it’s admission point criteria based on the 8th grade national exam scores, the student’s middle school overall GPA, and the school’s specific requirements. Yes!!! All of this to apply to attend high school!

Another unique feature about Hungarian high schools is that many of the schools specialize in subjects such as art, performing arts, technology and computer sciences, language, health sciences, environmental services and architecture.

My school, Pannonhalmi, is a regular high school that prepares students for university. While the school does not offer a specialized curriculum,Ā two things make it attractive. Students with learning disabilities are welcome here. Although we are not a bilingual school, we offer classes in multiple languages in addition to English. We now offer Chinese, Russian and Spanish. We are blessed that so many of our children are quite interested in languages, and this has led to a beautiful, increasingly diverse studentĀ population speaking many languages confidently.

My proudest English teacher moment was in early December when one of my 8th-grade students, whom I have taught since she was in 1st grade, told me she passed the national language exam in preparation for high school!

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING THANKS ALL YEAR ROUND

The joy I feel when I walk in the hallways when my students speak to me in English is immeasurable. When I first arrived at my school, my students could not or would not speak English because they lacked confidence, and those who showed bravado would often say “Good Morning!” but at 2pm in the afternoon. Now I offer 45-minute speaking classes with one rule: our classroom is an English-only-Zone, and my students are only allowed to speak English. It’s wonderful to see how they all have grown.

Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: ā€œThe Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!

Psalm 118:15
