Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, is an opportunity to recognize the stories, faith, and contributions of Hispanic communities. For the church, it is also a reminder that the body of Christ is made richer by the many cultures, languages, and people God has created. 

Here are five ideas your church can celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in a way that honors diversity and deepens relationships beyond October.

Incorporate Spanish and English into your services through Scripture reading, prayers, songs, dance, or other elements of worship. Learn a familiar worship song in Spanish or collaborate with a Spanish-speaking congregation to hold a shared service. Worshipping together gives us a glimpse of the beautiful diversity of God’s kingdom, where people from every nation, tribe, and language will praise God together (Rev 7:9).

Create a time for people to share experiences and traditions that have shaped their faith. This could be during a worship service, Sunday School, youth events, or adult classes. As we listen to personal stories and testimonies, we find common ground and deepen our understanding of one another while recognizing the uniqueness each person and culture brings to the body of Christ. 

Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the many cultures and traditions that are part of Hispanic communities. They reflect a variety of countries, dialects, and experiences. With local members of the Hispanic community, plan a gathering featuring music, art, food, or other cultural traditions represented in your area. This opens the door for relationship and mutual learning rather than simply holding a cultural day.

Use this month to strengthen and expand relationships already present in your church and community through intentional prayer. Pray for Hispanic families, pastors, immigrants, and leaders, celebrating how God is at work while also lifting up the challenges people face. Look for ways your church can build genuine, ongoing relationships with Hispanic churches and Hispanic-serving organizations in your area. Consider partnering with them for a service project, fellowship event, or prayer night.

Your church can also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by getting to know one of the twenty-two global servants serving in Iberoamerica and the Caribbean. You can join a short-term mission team, download prayer cards, support a specific ministry or project, write an encouraging note, or give financially to a global servant. All of these are tangible ways for you or your church to participate in what God is doing among people in the Hispanic community.

Hispanic Heritage Month may only last 31 days on the calendar, but the relationships built during this time can continue throughout the year and in years to come. As the church listens to stories, worships together, learns from different cultures, and joins in God’s work, we become a fuller reflection of the body of Christ.
