September: In most countries, when a person reaches age 18, they are considered an a.d.u.l.t. If that is true, then we are to be considered as adults for reaching 18 years of service. That is a scary thought! What happens when you are an adult?

Most of us prefer not to grow up: we don’t want to have responsibilities. We don’t want to lose the freedom of being young and having someone else take care of you (buy your clothes, decide what you’ll eat, where you’ll go, who you’ll meet…). Why not stay young forever? Like Peter Pan, right?

But then, there is the other side of the coin: like the Christopher Robin’s of the world (in the new movie) who rush into being adults to enjoy the benefits of adulthood. But then, they forget the fun of being young at heart. They become so focused on productivity that they lose touch with the little things that count. They are so concentrated on adulthood, that they forget that we need to be children at heart to inherit the kingdom of God!

As we prepare to depart at the end of the month from the USA and Puerto Rico to start our new journey in Colombia, we pray that we can be balanced adults: that we can be responsible about our decisions and can be focused in our tasks while being young at heart, playful, and free to enjoy God’s care for us and those around us. After all, isn’t He the One who called us and continues to send us out of ourselves and into the world?

Septiembre: En muchos países, cuando una persona llega a los 18, se le considera a.d.u.l.t.o. De ser cierto, debemos ser considerados como adultos porque alcanzamos los 18 años de servicio. ¡Ese pensamiento nos aterra! ¿Qué pasa cuando llegamos a la adultez?

La mayoría preferimos no crecer: no queremos tener responsabilidades. No queremos perder la libertad de ser jóvenes y que otra persona se ocupe de ti (compre tu ropa, decida qué comerás, dónde irás, a quién conocerás…). ¿Por qué no quedarnos jóvenes por siempre? Como Peter Pan, ¿no?

Pero entonces, está el otro lado de la moneda: los Christopher Robin del mundo (en la nueva película) que se apuran por ser adultos para disfrutar los beneficios de la adultez. Pero, en el proceso, olvidan la diversión de tener corazones joviales. Se enfocan tanto en la productividad que pasan por alto los detalles pequeños que cuentan. Se enfocan tanto en la adultez, ¡que olvidan que debemos ser como la niñez para heredar el reino de Dios!

Al prepararnos para salir a fin de mes de EEUU y Puerto Rico para empezar nuestra nueva aventura en Colombia, oramos que podamos ser adultos balanceados: responsables de nuestras decisiones y enfocados en nuestras tareas a la vez que mantenemos corazones joviales, juguetones y libres para disfrutar los cuidados de Dios para nosotros y quienes nos rodearán. ¿Acaso no es Él quien nos llamó y nos sigue enviando del interior hacia el mundo?
