January: How better to start this year 2019 than with a good foundation?!? Yes, 1 Corinthians 3.11 (NABS) says, “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Let us lay together a good foundation for this new year in our new ministry in Colombia.

During the World Mission Conference in 2014, at the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the mission society, our former area director introduced us to Pablo Moreno, Rector of UNIBAUTISTA (The Baptist University Foundation and Baptist Theological Seminary in Cali). Our desire to serve in Colombia was finally finding a venue for service.

We met again in Nicaragua in 2016 during the Theological Consultation and learned of their interest in our Bible materials for discipleship in Colombia. So, while on our US/PR assignment, the Foundation issued a formal invitation via video chat with our area director to serve with them in Colombia.

In October 2018, within weeks of our arrival in Colombia, we had our first set of meetings in UNIBAUTISTA. We were happy to meet again with their Rector Pablo Moreno and Vice rector Leonel Rubiano. They are fully committed to providing a very sound, biblical and theological education to all who reach out to the Foundation; which was established in 1953 by Baptist missionaries. It has since seen many graduating classes of those who are being prepared to serve in Colombia and overseas. They offer their theology program in their Cali campus, online, and in their extension centers. They also offer a variety of diplomas to address the many needs in the churches and communities. That is why the Foundation invited us to join their services in Colombia, particularly to support with Biblical education and discipleship to ethnic groups in the country. One of these groups is the Wayuu in The Guajira Northern Region. While in Colombia, we will be able to share with the Wayuu and other ethnic groups the Bible study materials that we have been developing and using since our assignment in Nicaragua. This Part 2 about Jesus, of our resource “Of the Way”, is progressing and we trust that it will be a blessing to those in Nicaragua that already had access to Part 1 about The Bible, as well as those who will now have access to it in Colombia and anywhere in Iberoamerica and The Caribbean where it is studied.

While in Cali last October, we were blessed to meet Ruth Amaya, our Wayuu sister from The Guajira. She is a soft-spoken young lady yet energetic and very determined to “share with my people what I am learning here in the Seminary”. Ruth goes home for her Winter and Summer breaks and we are praying to be able to join her this Summer to meet the communities (they call them “Rancherías”) and their leaders and to learn how we can best serve them in their own context as part of the family of disciples. Pray with us for this opportunity to get to The Guajira with our Wayuu sister. We are truly looking forward to this opportunity!

Meanwhile, we continue preparing the Bible study materials, working toward the Global Baptist Peace Conference (GBPC), and getting our bearings in our new country. Next month we will share in our February Acts in Action about SEPAZ Foundation and the launching of the GBPC in Cali (February 27th) in anticipation of the full conference, July 15-20, 2019.

Enero: ¿Qué mejor manera de comenzar el 2019 que con un buen fundamento? Sí, 1 Corintios 3.11 (LBLA) dice: “Pues nadie puede poner otro fundamento que el que ya está puesto, el cual es Jesucristo.” Unámonos a poner un buen fundamento en este año nuevo y ministerio en Colombia.

Durante la Conferencia Misionera Mundial del 2014, la celebración de los 200 años, nuestro director de área nos presentó a Pablo Moreno, Rector de la UNIBAUTISTA (La Fundación Bautista y el Seminario Teológico Bautista de Cali). Nuestro deseo de servir en Colombia empezaba a encontrar una alternativa.

Nos vimos otra vez en Nicaragua en 2016 en la Consulta Teológica y hubo interés en traer a Colombia el material de estudio bíblico y discipulado. Así que, en la asignación en EEUU/PR, la Fundación nos invitó formalmente por videochat con nuestra directora de área para servir con ellos en Colombia.

En octubre de 2018, a par de semanas de haber llegado a Colombia, visitamos la UNIBAUTISTA. Qué alegría volver a encontrarnos con el Rector Moreno y el Vicerrector Leonel Rubiano. Ellos están muy comprometidos en proveer una educación bíblico-teológica sólida a quienes se acercan a la Fundación; establecida en 1953 por misioneros bautistas. Desde entonces ha visto muchas clases graduadas de quienes se preparan para servir en Colombia y el extranjero. Ofrecen su programa en teología en su campus de Cali, online y en sus centros de extensión. También ofrecen una variedad de diplomados que suplen las necesidades en las iglesias y las comunidades. Por ello la Fundación nos invitó a unirnos a sus servicios en Colombia, particularmente apoyando la educación bíblica y el discipulado entre grupos indígenas del país. Uno de estos grupos son los Wayuu en La Guajira Región Norte. Al estar en Colombia, podremos compartir con los Wayuu y otros grupos indígenas el material de estudio bíblico que hemos venido desarrollando y usando desde nuestra asignación en Nicaragua. La Parte 2 acerca de Jesús, del material “Los del Camino”, va progresando y confiamos que será de bendición a quienes tuvieron acceso a la Parte 1 acerca de La Biblia en Nicaragua, así como a quienes tendrán acceso en Colombia y dondequiera en Iberoamérica y El Caribe donde lo estudien.

Estando en Cali en octubre, tuvimos la bendición de conocer a Ruth Amaya, nuestra hermana Wayuu de La Guajira. Ella es una joven de hablar suave pero muy enérgica y determinada a “compartir con mi pueblo lo que aprendo en el Seminario”. Ruth regresa a su casa en los recesos de invierno y verano y oramos poder acompañarla en este verano para conocer las comunidades (que llaman “Rancherías”) y a sus líderes y así descubrir cómo servirles mejor en su contexto como parte de la familia de discípulos. Ora por esta oportunidad de ir a La Guajira con nuestra hermana Wayuu. Tenemos muchos deseos de que llegue esta visita…

Mientras tanto, seguimos preparando el material de estudios bíblicos, trabajando en la preparación de la Conferencia Global Bautista por la Paz (CGBP) y aclimatándonos a nuestro nuevo país. En febrero compartiremos en Hechos en Acción acerca de la Fundación SEPAZ y el lanzamiento de la CGPB en Cali (27 de febrero) en anticipación a la conferencia completa que será del 15 al 20 de julio de 2019.

Para estar donde cada quien está y hacer lo que cada quién hace, cada servidor global y su red debe asegurar el 100% de su apoyo con promesas continuas. Entonces, el semáforo con luces verdes, amarillas y rojas evalúa la salud de esa base de apoyo. Te rogamos que consideres en oración cómo Dios te usará para que no hayan amarillos y rojos rezagados y y en riesgo de ser removidos temporalmente o definitivamente.
