October: How many parents / aunts and uncles / grandparents out there agree with us that weaning sucks? How many parents out there agree with us, on the other hand, that weaning is winning? Isn’t that what we’ve known all along, since we conceived, waited 40 weeks, gave birth, and saw them grow before our very own eyes? Isn’t that what God Himself experiences with us? Indeed, by weaning, we win!

At the time of this writing, we are traveling through Hurricane Florence from Pennsylvania (PA) to Florida (FL) by land so we can catch our planes to Colombia. We delayed our exit from PA due to the hurricane. What a blessing to spend a couple of more days with Carolina and even make one more church visit! God is good. Yes, Carolina stayed in PA (yes, stayed is not the same as we left Carolina in PA, though they’re two sides of the same coin…). And, yes, Alberto stayed in Kentucky (KY). See where we’re going?

When children grow and wean, we win to see them mature and be responsible adults. We enjoy seeing them take charge of their education and their own contributions to life through the intelligence and the gifts God has granted them along with the wisdom to be good stewards of their lives. Being in different places is H.A.R.D. but this is part of their (and our!) growth. Just as we weaned them naturally as children, they have weaned themselves naturally as young adults. By weaning we all win. The ultimate goal of every parent / grandparent / relative is to see their child healthily weaned. What a blessing to see that before our eyes!!!

As we embark upon this new adventurous assignment to Colombia, we are looking forward to accompanying many closer to Jesus in their discipleship journey. Just like many accompanied us (and still do) we also look forward to seeing many eventually wean naturally (as we have seen so many in Chile, Spain, and Nicaragua who are now nurturing new disciples of their own).

As the Apostle Paul encourages us in Ephesians 4.11-16 (in ESV): “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” Let’s call this passage Discipleship 101, for all of us to carry out. Right?

And then, as fruit of this, John tells us in chapter 13 verse 35 that: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Therefore, as a result of this discipleship journey, we also love abundantly each other and those that surround us. Hence, our excitement to finally get to meet those whom God has been preparing us to accompany and love in Colombia. How many? No idea. For how long? Lord willing, for four years. Where? In Cartagena where we plan to reside, in Bogota and Medellín where part of our extended family and friends live (including our dearest fellow Puerto Rican Walla Febres and her Colombian husband Leonardo Florez), in Cali where UNIBAUTISTA and the SEPAZ Foundation are located, in The Guajira where we are looking forward to meeting our Wayuu siblings, and anywhere else in the country that God leads us. Wouldn’t you also be excited? Aren’t you? We most definitely are!!!

Thanks so much for your ongoing prayers throughout this transition from Nicaragua to our extensive Puerto Rico and USA 22 months long assignment and onto C.O.L.O.M.B.I.A. So much happened in this transition… As our adult children enjoy this semester in seminary and college, respectively, we anticipate a busy schedule ourselves with our youngest daughter starting her homeschooling high school experience as an only child in our almost empty nested home with her Güeli (gradma) and these two unworthy servants who only seek to do what is our duty (Luke 17.10) with tons of love and enthusiasm, because we do it onto the One who calls us each day to follow Him and be salt to the earth.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers with all these adjustments, with winning by weaning, with meetings in different places with our host partners, and getting our bearings with life in Colombia 30 years and 2 months since we met. Be sure to send us your own update so we can also continue to pray for you, your family, and your congregation. It makes our day each time we get a note from you or a FB post at BGs Et Al. PS. We have arrived to C.O.L.O.M.B.I.A.! Yes, we flew from Florida to Paraguay arriving in Bogotá on Thursday, September 27th. This will remain an historical date for our mission society since we are the first missionary unit to live and serve in this beautiful country. Glory be to God for such a privilege and blessing. In Bogotá we ran a few necessary and important errands.

On Monday, October 1st we flew to Cartagena. New fiscal year, new residence. We have already started the process for our permanent residents’ IDs for Mayra and her mom Hilda. They’ll be ready in a week. What a difference from all previous countries! Another prayer answered… We also processed our new local cell phone numbers and we’ll have them within the next three days. We are coordinating with our partners to meet by the end of the month to revisit and re-evaluate where we will plug in and serve in the efforts of partnership and expansion of the Kingdom for which the Lord calls us each day and has brought us to this country. At first glance, there is a lot to do and we are grateful for not being lone rangers but rather partners with locals and in partnership with you and so many churches in Puerto Rico and the USA that are part of our support network.

This is the second and last month of promotion of the 2018 World Mission Offering. Octubre: ¿Cuántos de ustedes, padre y madre / tío y tía / abuelo y abuela que nos lees, concuerdan que destetar es difícil? ¿Por otro lado, cuántos concuerdan que destetando todos ganamos? ¿Acaso no lo hemos sabido siempre, desde que concebimos, esperamos 40 semanas, parimos y les vimos crecer frente a nuestros ojos? ¿Acaso no es eso lo que Dios mismo experimenta con nosotros? ¡Ciertamente, destetando, ganamos!

Al escribir estas líneas, viajamos atravesando por tierra el Huracán Florence desde Pennsylvania (PA) hacia la Florida (FL) para nuestros vuelos a Colombia. Atrasamos la salida de PA por el huracán. ¡Qué bendición pasar unos días más con Carolina y hasta visitar una iglesia más! Dios es bueno. Sí, Carolina se quedó en PA (sí, se quedó no es lo mismo que dejamos a Carolina en PA, aunque son dos lados de la misma moneda…). Y, sí, Alberto se quedó en Kentucky (KY). ¿Ves para dónde vamos?

Cuando la prole crece y se desteta, ganamos al verles como adultos maduros y responsables. Da gusto verles asumir su educación y aportes propios a la vida a través de la inteligencia y los dones que Dios les ha dado y la sabiduría con la que les permite administrarlos. Estar en diferentes lugares es D.I.F.Í.C.I.L. pero esto es parte de su (¡y nuestro!) crecimiento. Así como destetamos naturalmente a nuestra prole, así se han destetado naturalmente en adultos jóvenes. Al destetarles ganamos todos. La meta final de cada padre y de cada madre, cada tío y tía, cada abuelo y cada abuela es ver a su prole saludablemente destetada. ¡¡¡Qué bendición verlo frente a nuestros propios ojos!!!

Al embarcarnos en nuestra nueva asignación aventurera en Colombia, anticipamos acompañar a muchas personas más cerca de Jesús en sus peregrinajes y discipulado. Así como muchos nos acompañaron (y siguen acompañando) anticipamos verles destetar naturalmente eventualmente (como les hemos visto en Chile, España y Nicaragua y ahora son quienes acompañan una nueva camada propia).

Así como nos alentó el Apóstol Pablo en Efesios 4.11-16 (en DHH): “Y él mismo concedió a unos ser apóstoles y a otros profetas, a otros anunciar el evangelio y a otros ser pastores y maestros. Así preparó a los del pueblo santo para un trabajo de servicio, para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo hasta que todos lleguemos a estar unidos por la fe y el conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, y alcancemos la edad adulta, que corresponde a la plena madurez de Cristo. Ya no seremos como niños, que cambian fácilmente de parecer y que son arrastrados por el viento de cualquier nueva enseñanza hasta dejarse engañar por gente astuta que anda por caminos equivocados. Más bien, profesando la verdad en el amor, debemos crecer en todo hacia Cristo, que es la cabeza del cuerpo. Y por Cristo el cuerpo entero se ajusta y se liga bien mediante la unión entre sí de todas sus partes; y cuando cada parte funciona bien, todo va creciendo y edificándose en amor.” Llamemos este pasaje Discipulado 101; lo que cada uno de nosotros debemos hacer. ¿No?

Y entonces, como fruto de ello, Juan nos dice en el capítulo 13 versículo 35 que: “Si se aman los unos a los otros, todo el mundo se dará cuenta de que son discípulos míos.” Así que, como resultado de este camino de discipulado, nos amamos abundantemente y a quienes nos rodean. Por ello, nuestra emoción de poder finalmente llegar a conocer a las personas en Colombia por quienes Dios nos ha estado preparando. ¿Cuántas? Ni idea. ¿Por cuánto tiempo? Dios mediante, por cuatro años. ¿Dónde? En Cartagena donde planeamos residir, en Bogotá y Medellín donde vive parte de nuestra familia extendida y amistades (incluyendo a nuestra querida Walla y su esposo Leonardo), en Cali donde están la UNIBAUTISTA y la Fundación SEPAZ, en La Guajira donde anticipamos conocer nuestra familia Wayuu, y doquiera en el país que Dios nos dirija a ir. ¿No te emocionarías? ¿Lo estás? ¡¡¡Nosotros definitivamente que sí!!!

Muchas gracias por seguir orando durante esta transición entre Nicaragua y una temporada extendida de 22 meses entre Puerto Rico y los EE.UU. y ahora en C.O.L.O.M.B.I.A. Fue tanto lo qué pasó en esta transición… Mientras nuestros hijos adultos disfrutan su semestre en el seminario y la universidad, respectivamente, tendremos una agenda intensa también junto a nuestra hija menor quien entra a su escuela superior en el hogar y será la hija única en nuestro nido cuasi vacío junto a su Güeli (su abuelita) y estos dos servidores inútiles que solo buscamos más que cumplir con nuestra obligación (Lucas 17.10) con toneladas de amor y entusiasmo, porque lo hacemos para Aquel quien nos llama cada día a seguirle y ser sal de la tierra.

Sigue orando por nosotros durante estos ajustes, ganando mientras destetamos, en reuniones en diferentes lugares con nuestros socios y reconociendo y acostumbrándonos a la vida en Colombia 30 años y 2 meses desde que nos conocimos. P.D. ¡Llegamos a C.O.L.O.M.B.I.A.! Sí, volamos de Florida a Paraguay llegando a Bogotá el jueves, 27 de septiembre. Ese será siempre un día histórico para nuestra sociedad misionera. Somos la primera unidad misionera, desde el 1814 que se organizó, que han enviado a servir y vivir en este hermoso país. Gloria a Dios por tal privilegio y bendición. En Bogotá hicimos un par de trámites importantes y necesarios.

El lunes, 1 de octubre volamos a Cartagena. Nuevo año fiscal, nueva residencia. Ya tramitamos las cédulas de extranjería de Mayra y su Mami Hilda. En una semana estarán listas. ¡Qué diferente a todos los países anteriores! Otra oración contestada… También tramitamos nuestros nuevos números de celular local y en tres días los tendremos. Ya estamos coordinando con nuestros socios en misión para reunirnos a finales del mes de octubre para retomar y reevaluar dónde nos insertaremos al quehacer y los esfuerzos en que coparticiparemos en las labores del reino para los cuales Dios nos llama diariamente y nos ha traído a este país. A simple vista, hay mucho por hacer por lo que apreciamos tanto que no hemos llegado como llaneros solitarios, sino para coparticipar con socios en misión locales y en coparticipación contigo y tantas iglesias en Puerto Rico y Estados Unidos que forman nuestra red de apoyo.

Este es el segundo y último mes de promoción de la Ofrenda Misionera Mundial 2018. Cada centavo hace posible que la obra del Señor a través de Ministerios Internacionales continúe. Cada oportunidad que tenemos de expandir el Reino del Señor es una bendición. Contamos con tus oraciones, tus notitas físicas o electrónicas y tu apoyo económico continuo.
