Questions MKs Would Love to be Asked

Are you interested in getting to know missionary, but aren’t sure where to start? Here are some great questions to encourage discussion and relationship building with MKs. However, please be aware that some MKs are shy and may not want to chat with you.

Questions to get Elementary-aged MKs talking
  • Tell me about the place you live so I can picture it as you describe it.
  • Can you describe a day in your regular life?
  • What do you like most about your host country?
  • When you are in your host country, what do you miss about the U.S.? When you are in the U.S.,
    what do you miss about your host country?
  • Tell me about your friends/school/people you know in your host country.
Questions for MK Teens and Young Adults

Church Lobby Questions
(for when you only have a few minutes)

  • What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you overseas?
  • What do you miss most about your host country?
  • Can you describe a day in your regular life?
  • Where’s your favorite place to go in your host country?
  • In which places do you feel most at home?

Coffee Shop Questions
(for when you have time to go a little deeper)

  • What’s the hardest thing about being an MK? What’s the best thing about being an MK?
  • What characteristics of your host country’s culture have become a part of you?
  • What is hardest about visiting/returning to your passport country?
  • What are some of your deepest
What NOT to say to a missionary kid:
  • Aren’t you glad to be home?
    MKs who have lived away from the U.S. for a long time may not feel like they are “coming home.”
  • Do you remember me?
    Please don’t be offended, but MKs meet hundreds of people as they travel to various churches with
    their parents, and they’ve likely been away for several years. They may not remember you.
  • Can you say something in __________ (insert foreign language here)?
    Some MKs may not mind answering this question, but many feel put on the spot.
  • Have you had fun over there?
    They haven’t been on vacation; they’ve been living their lives. Life is filled with both
    good and hard things.
