GoalThe goal of this project is to provide Burmese children access to life changing cleft palate reconstruction.
SummaryThis project seeks to raise $11,500 annually in order to provide cleft palate reconstruction in Thailand for 10 children from the Mekong region of Burma (Myanmar).
DescriptionCleft palate reconstruction in the Mekong region offers transformative benefits that go far beyond physical appearance. However, the ability to access this needed care has been greatly impacted by war and civil unrest in the region. Because of safety concern, patients are brought to hospitals and clinics in northern Thailand to receive care. Without corrective surgery, these children may face challenges in articulating sounds clearly, leading to communication difficulties and potential social stigmatization. Surgery paves the way for clearer speech and language skills enabling the children to communicate effectively and participate more fully in social and educational setting. The benefits of cleft palate reconstruction are major and include making it easier for children to breathe and eat, which reduces the risk of malnutrition and promotes better growth. They have better dental health and experience a positive transformation in their self-image, which leads to improved mental health. The younger the patients are when they receive care, the greater the lifelong benefits. Currently 10 children are awaiting a spot and the financial resources to have this life changing surgery. This project seeks to raise $11,500 annually which will pay for the travel from the Wa state in Burma into Thailand, the cleft palate reconstructive surgery and the patient’s accommodations.
Suggested GiftsA gift of $500 will provide travel and accommodations for multiple patients to receive care. A gift of $1,000 will cover all the needed care for a child including surgery, transport to the hospital and accommodations while recovering. A generous gift of $5,000 will secure life changing surgery and care for 5 patients.
Prayer RequestsPray for the families of each patient who will benefit from the hygiene education provided before and after the reconstructive surgery. Pray that this project will improve the health of Wa children and give them a brighter future.
