style="font-size:16.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:verdana,sans-serif;">Dear Friends and Family,

I just don't understand how it is that it's almost the end of April. Didn't we just get through the Christmas Season? We enjoyed the cool weather but the hot season came almost overnight.

After our family came into 2015, we saw a bit of a change for our ministry here in Chiang Rai.

Tan has continued to work as a bookkeeper in Envisage, a business/ministry enterprise that seeks to bring about reform in Myanmar through providing a mapping service of important social, economic, and political information for concerned international organizations. The ministry, headed by another IM worker, Joel Hoefle, is growing with several new staff and a move to a new facility. Tan is enjoying the multi-cultural team. Please pray for a new co-worker of Tan's, Gift, a young Thai woman. Gift, a Buddhist from Northeastern Thailand, has begun going to church with us and shows real interest in becoming a believer.

As of January, I (Scott) moved over to work more fully to focus on enabling nationals with heart to serve in Eastern Shan State. Much of my current energy is going into helping the Bala Foundation. They are trying to simultaneously pursue three initiatives: a ministry to at-risk young people in Eastern Shan State, a counseling program in Chiang Rai, and an Akha Food and Coffee Shop.

But in this letter I wanted to share about a prayer need at the International Christian School. As you may know, our wonderful school campus, the latest building of which we only just completed in 2013, has to be almost entirely rebuilt due to the announcement that the Thai Highway Department will be constructing a bypass which will encroach on our school property and take 4 of our current 5 building structures. Since I was so heavily involved in getting the current campus built, it seems a waste not to use that experience to help the school with this REbuilding process. So for the past year, except for the Summer break, I have been rather heavily involved once again as we work together to come up with a new campus design and negotiate with the authorities on a settlement package. We are still a long ways from being ready to build, nor have we received word back from the authorities on our latest compensation request. Building costs have risen dramatically over the past few years, so we need favor from the government to compensate us generously. We are asking them for over $1 million! Please pray that we will trust the Lord and allow Him to lead us and give us strength to do all that has yet to be done. And most importantly, that we will stay united as we work together. It's easy to get frustrated with each other.

Blessings and Thanks, Scott and Tan
Wed, 06 May 2015 20:00:00 -0400 https://internationalministries.org/read/58281-ministry-changes-in-chiang-rai https://internationalministries.org/read/58281-ministry-changes-in-chiang-rai Pray for Boon
Greetings from Thailand! It's been a while since we've shared with you, and our latest newsletter is actually more of a prayer letter. Your prayers are sought after now as never before.

Dear Friends and Faithful,

It’s been a long Summer with little communication from the Coats. We have returned from our two-plus months in the US Midwest a month already. It was a great time catching up with many of our supporting churches. Thanks so much to all of you who hosted and met with us. You have been so faithful with your support and your prayers.

The time at the American Baptist International Ministries All Staff Gathering to celebrate 200 years was very special for my family. To worship and share with all our IM colleagues was an incredible first for us.

Though we are still in transition and we are still seeking to discern His direction for what and/or how we will engage with ministry in Eastern Shan State, it’s hard not to get excited with some of the possibilities that are coming. So stay tuned to find out what God has cooking.

Meanwhile, in our preparation for starting a new ministry, my Karen friend Boon who was planning to join us when we initiate something in Myanmar, and whom some of you have met, has been diagnosed with Leukemia. We came back to find him quite ill. He started his first of eight chemotherapy treatments this month. It almost killed him. He got very ill with bleeding and infection. But he seems to have recovered somewhat and wants to keep going with the treatment. His next treatment is next week. PLEASE PRAY FOR BOON’S HEALING. WE BELIEVE IN THE HEALING POWER OF PRAYER. I know God will heal him, if He chooses.

Boon is such a good guy and has such a heart to serve. Please pray for his wife, Phanee, who has been living with Lupus for a couple years, and their 13 year old, daughter Ming Ming. Neither parent is working now. No income and two very serious diseases. Wow. It makes my heart cry out.

Thanks!

Scott and Tan

Sat, 13 Sep 2014 20:00:00 -0400 https://internationalministries.org/read/55706-pray-for-boon https://internationalministries.org/read/55706-pray-for-boon Snakes, Temples and Scholarships
Dear Friends,

Almost every week during the month of September, we found snake in our yard. One day a cobra was found curled up around some school bags in our living room! The silly thing was almost a yard long. We are living here in Northern Thailand with almost all the modern conveniences and looks of a Western country. But snakes in one’s living room is a stark reminder that things are not quite like America yet.

Another clear symbol that the Western world hasn’t completely overrun our Oriental culture are the Buddhist temples. We have them on almost every city block and in most villages. Though I have grown to appreciate them as something uniquely Thai, the temple are also a clear indication that the vast majority of Thai’s don’t know Jesus. My own mother-in-law, Tan’s mom, is a devout Buddhist who goes to the temple often. Since she’s a widow with free time, she will stay at the temple for several nights at a time. So please continue your prayers for this country. It is claimed 95% of Thai people claim to be Buddhist, but we are seeing change. More people are open to the Gospel than ever before. A large number of ethnic minority people are believers now and together with missionaries from all over the world, they are starting to see significant gains in the larger Buddhist society. And because of your partnership with us, you have been a part of the effort. Tan and I continue to live and serve here, and we seek to be witnesses to the love of Christ to the people around us - including Tan’s sweet mom.

Well, like we planned, Tan and I have begun work in our new roles at Envisage, the new ministry that serves the people of Burma through research and documentation. Tan has been really enjoying getting back into office finances 23 years after she graduated from college in accounting. The business of raising three children took precedence over a career, but now that Sam, our youngest, is in 11th grade, it’s time to see about serving the Lord in different way. As for me, I have been starting to research the issues around human trafficking in the region as my first significant assignment.

Even though Tan and I have been putting most of our recent efforts at this new ministry, you may have surmised, that we have been involved in a number of other interesting things as well. One that you may be interested in is an Akha Scholarship Project for Lao young people. I may have mentioned this one to you awhile ago. It all started over five years ago, when Dr. Paul Lewis, a former missionary to the Akha and Lahu ethnic minority peoples in Burma and Thailand, was visiting friends and leaders here in Chiang Rai. At the end of his visit, he challenged a few of us to see what we could do about helping young poor Akha in Laos to have access to education like so many Akha in Thailand have had over the past 40 years. To help make this a reality, he provided initial scholarship support the Elaine Lewis Memorial Fund which he set up in memory of his wife.

<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype channeling funds to Akha university students in Lao PDR for the past four years. Almost a dozen have graduated and another 25 are currently being assisted. This is very exciting because before this time, very few Akha have had an opportunity for further education. Recently, representatives from the Akha Scholarship Project committee, who live in Thailand, travelled over to Vientiane, the capital of Lao PDR, to meet some of the young Lao Akha people in the project. We found that the need for scholarships is great.

If you are interested in helping with this fund, International Ministries has set up an account people.

Again, thanks so much for your partnership as we together seek to bring God’s Kingdom in Thailand, https://internationalministries.org/read/44449-back-in-chiang-rai Blessings on Thai New Year
APRIL 2012
Happy Thai New Year Friends,

Most of you will remember that this is the time of year when the weather gets unbearably hot, work slows down - just because it's too hot to do otherwise, and Thai people celebrate the Thai New Year with water throwing. It's one of the wildest 3-5 days in the year. Our kids have gone out a time or two to participate. Tan and I prefer to hide in the shade.

Not only do Thai people have a beautiful tradition of blessing their parents like we do with Tan's mom (and Dad before he passed away last year) this time of year, but in our Thai church, the entire congregation blesses the elderly in a hand washing practice where we poor water over their hands and ask God to bless them. And they, in turn, ask God's blessing on us.

With the Thai New Year, the Mekong Minority Foundation (MMF) is coming into a new 'year' as well. Over the past six months, MMF has been trying to work out how it may be more effective in helping to mobilize local churches for ministry in their communities. As you know MMF has worked with denominational leaders in organizing events and seminars, but we have been looking for an effective approach that would help to motivate local churches to be ready to reach out to those in need in their communities.

Last month we arrived at a process which would invite groups in local churches to become involved in participatory Bible studies that are designed to ask the Lord to speak to them about what He may have them do to be salt and light in their own community. We are excited- and at the same time nervous - starting this new effort.

Finally, in the end we agreed that before we start down this track of encouraging churches to get involved in their communities, we ourselves in the MMF team, need to pray and seek God's leading in our own personal lives and as a team. Asking the question: How is He asking us to reach out to others in our community?

If any of you have experience in this area, we'd love to hear your stories. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.” This passage always struck me as referring to God’s faithfulness when we have sinned and how He will forgive us, bring us back to His path and allow us to keep serving Him. But this week as I lay on my back with a herniated lower disc, this verse takes on a whole new meaning for me. It has actually been quite an encouragement to me as I find myself physically unable to stand or walk or even sit without constant pain. All I can do is lie down. After almost three days of lying down last week, I went to the office confident that I was on the mend only to find myself, seven hours later coming back home in more pain than I can remember.

It’s funny how one can go from feeling strong and young one day to becoming totally dependent on loved ones to look after one’s every need the next. In late September, my middle son, Silas and I participated in mini-triathlon. We swam 750 meters, biked 20 kilometers, and ran(well, sort of) 5 kilometers. I didn’t lead the pack, but I did well and felt very much in shape. Afterwards, I wasn’t even sore!. Then two weeks later, while bending over to pick up a badminton birdie, I felt something rip in my lower back. Immediately, I knew that I’d done it again. I popped that same old weak disc and it would be days - maybe weeks - before I’d be able to function properly again. So here I am, forced to rest when I don’t feel sick or tired- just in pain.

God uses these things in our lives for a reason. He has something to teach me, I am sure. And I am reassured by the passage in Micah that He will be my light and let me get up again.

In other events, I was pleased this week when a group of 30 from our school, the Family Learning Center, went to the Hmong village where Tan and I visited last month and helped a poor widow and her children build a new house. She had been staying in a vacant house, but the owner had returned suddenly since our last visit, so she and the other five family members were sleeping in temporary arrangements. A number of people pitched in funds for some basic materials and while some of the high school students entertained village children, the rest helped the villagers to build this lady’s house. Three other widows in the village are expecting new houses now too. Oops. The needs never end. One young woman, about twenty years old with three small children, came up to my daughter and said “Tell your father that I’ll be calling to ask for a house too”. This young lady is so disparate, she is asking us to find an orphanage for her children. She’s willing to give them up so they can have a better life. We’re working on that one. Hopefully, we can find a place that will take both mom and her three little ones.

Blessings to you all. Thanks again for your prayers and support,

Scott and Tan

Sat, 31 Oct 2009 20:00:00 -0400 https://internationalministries.org/read/15097-october-2009 https://internationalministries.org/read/15097-october-2009 Abandoned Hmong Mothers Face Hardship

When something has happened that impacts me heavily, I usually take awhile to process it. Maybe after some time - a few days or weeks, if it’s still in my head, I figure it was something significant and so may write it down. But today, (9 Sept 09) one of these events took place that I feel I need to write down now.

Early this morning, with the kids farmed out at friends’ homes, Tan and I joined two of MMF’s staff, a Hmong pastor and a Thai leader from the local presbytery to visit the church where the Hmong pastor is serving. The village, 2 hours ride East of Chiang Rai, is located high in the hills just a few kilometers from the Lao border. It is large Hmong community made up two groups of Hmong; those who are considered Thai nationals and those who are recent immigrants from across the border in Lao or even Vietnam. Apparently, many of the immigrants have come because of religious persecution. They became believers, probably through Christian radio broadcasts and have been harassed because of it.

After the service and a lunch together, several women came to us and asked that we’d visit them in their homes before we returned back to Chiang Rai. We agreed to visit a few of them. After 5 hours of visiting from house to house, I was reeling with what I saw and heard. Two out of three stories were essentially the same.

Let me relate one: Dia (not her real name) is about 40 years old. She was very young when she married her husband. By the time she was 25 years old she’d had six children, four of whom had died. Her next and last child lived. It was a girl. Meanwhile, the husband, possibly frustrated with a the small number of offspring, took another wife. After some time, he began to abuse the first wife and even allowed the new wife to hurl insults at her and beat her as well. One day after 10 years of living in this abusive situation, he went after her with a machete. That’s when Dia decided that she’d had enough and asked for a divorce. Dia’s husband gladly agreed to this as he wouldn’t have to be responsible for her or her children. She moved out of his house into a 4 by 3 meter little bamboo hut with a mud floor. By this time her oldest son had a wife and 4 of his own children, so Dia moved into the hut with her two younger children who were in their early teens. Soon afterward a young man took Dia’s youngest daughter as his wife. She was 13 years old. Within months Dia found out she was going to be a grandmother – for the fifth time. About the time the baby was due Dia’s daughter was kicked out of her husband’s home apparently because his parents didn’t think she was a suitable-daughter-in-law. The son, though he appeared to care for his young bride, was unable to go against his father’s wishes and gave in to leaving her. Within weeks of moving back in with Dia, the teenager had a baby boy. So here was Dia, without a husband, living in a small hut with her two teenage kids and a new grandchild.
Then, three days ago, Dia was notified that her oldest son, had been arrested and charged with some as yet unknown crime leaving her to look after her daughter-in-law and her 4 young children.

All the while that Dia told us her story, she sat in her little hut holding one of her five grandchildren, while her daughter and daughter- in – law each held nursing infants and the other two children clambered for attention. Dia asked us to pray for her. She has become a believer only a few years ago and is wondering how this new Faith will help her to get through life as she’s no husband – meaning no clan to look after her - and a little band of helpless children and grandchildren.

Every story we heard today was only a slight variation of Dia’s. In another case, a young mother knew that her recently deceased husband had died of AIDS and was wondering how many of her three children were HIV positive, but was too afraid of finding out the results. In every case, abandoned mothers in traditional Hmong society have little place to turn. It’s taboo for parents to take them back as they have already left the clan to be a part of the husband’s. They are truly unwanted by anyone.

That’s why I was encouraged by Pastor Shalom who pastors the newly planted village church. It is he and his local congregation representing the community of Faith and it’s offer of love and concern for the whole family of believers that lives out the eternal hope we have in Jesus. These people have a lot to teach us. They know what it is to experience Grace, when they are able have hope in what would seem a truly hopeless situation.

Please pray for these abandoned mothers, Pastor Shalom and this church as they reach out, and the MMF as we seek to encourage and strengthen the church and it’s pastor.

Blessings,

Scott Coats

Sat, 19 Sep 2009 20:00:00 -0400 https://internationalministries.org/read/14163-abandoned-hmong-mothers-face-hardship https://internationalministries.org/read/14163-abandoned-hmong-mothers-face-hardship Burmese Migrant Workers in Chiang Rai : Aseu’s Story
Burmese Migrant Workers Chiang Rai: Aseu’s Story

Aseu’s life is filled with uncertainty. An ethnic minority worker from Myanmar, she came to Thailand more than 10 years ago in search of a better life. Alone, and without family, she eventually found work at a rubber plantation. The work was hard and the hours long, but as a single woman Aseu faced greater challenges. Every day she feared the unwanted advances of her male co-workers, who also worked at the plantation. Scared, she talked to her boss, who suggested she should marry a man named Amou, who also worked at the plantation. A hard worker, Amou was seen as a good potential husband. Aseu took the advice and married Amou. But life after their marriage was not easy and after the birth of their third child, a son, Amou changed. He became an alcoholic, violent and started beating Aseu. Then, after 10 years of marriage, Amou walked out on his family. Aseu was left with the enormous responsibility of raising her children alone. She managed to pick up some low paying work, but without enough money to rent a home, the family were forced to sleep in roadside huts and at the local bus station.

Then one day the neighbour of a school run by Chiang Rai’s Grace Burmese Church, alerted staff to Aseu’s desperate situation. The staff found Aseu, brought her to the school and started helping her by finding her a job and a safe place to live. The church offered to pay Aseu’s rent for three months, while she was able to earn 130 baht ($US4) a day working at a restaurant. Aseu’s eldest daughter, 7, was also granted a ‘white card’, enabling her to have residency in Thailand and to attend school. She is now enrolled in first grade at Sahasat School, a Christian school for tribal children in Chiang Rai.

Just when Aseu’s life appeared on the improve Amou tracked her down after two years of separation. Aseu was naturally frightened and feared for her family’s safety. She sought advice from the Grace Church pastor. The next day, Aseu’s daughter vanished from school. Aseu discovered Amou had abducted their daughter from school, promising to take her to buy a new school uniform. Two MMF staff, who have helped with the development of the Grace Church school, began the search for Aseu’s daughter. One staff member had spotted Amou earlier that day at an intersection in Chiang Rai. They returned to ask local shop-keepers if they’d seen him. He had told shop-keepers that if his ex-wife came looking for him to tell her he had gone to a town 40-kilometres from Chiang Rai. Staff travelled to the town to only to discover Amou had tricked them. The migrant assistance team returned to Chiang Rai, and used their Burmese community contacts to try and track down Amou and his daughter. After five-minutes someone called to say they had been spotted travelling on the highway on the southern side of the city. Staff drove to the scene and confronted Amou. They convinced him that the girl’s education was important and that it would be better for her to live with Aseu. He agreed, but a week later Amou returned to Aseu’s house. He asked to stay for two weeks while looking for work, but again got drunk and abusive and broke windows at the home. MMF staff again intervened telling him if he did not stop the violence or leave within two weeks they would call police. Amou eventually left.

Aseu’s life still has many unknowns. Aseu and her youngest two children still have no official legal papers, depriving them of the opportunity to attend Thai school. These children attend the Burmese school six days a week, including Saturday’s while Aseu works. Aseu still has many fears but she knows she has been blessed by the love and compassion of the Grace church members and MMF’s migrant assistance staff.

Note: The Mekong Minority Foundation and Grace Church of Chiang Rai are working together to improve the plight of Burmese migrants in Chiang Rai.

Article originally written by Alisa Coats. Thanks to Dr. Scott Downman for assistance in editing.

July 2009
Thu, 13 Aug 2009 20:00:00 -0400 https://internationalministries.org/read/13608-burmese-migrant-workers-in-chiang-rai-aseu-s-story https://internationalministries.org/read/13608-burmese-migrant-workers-in-chiang-rai-aseu-s-story July 2009
Dear Faithful Friends, Supporters and Family,

Once again it kind of overwhelms me when I think about all of you and your faithful support to us so that we can continue to live and serve work. Just the other day, I was thinking about it and feeling so blessed by you all. You must be praying for us too, because we can feel God’s blessing on us.

In the last month or our regular routine was interrupted when school was out for the Summer. The first thing we did was take a family trip to see close friends, the Stouts, in Bangladesh. This picture was taken in front of an ancient Hindu temple in the North of the country. This trip was a great opportunity for us to experience a very different culture from our own here in Thailand. What a blessing.

But life is not without it’s concerns. Amidst all we have to thank God for, we are also concerned for our close friends, Peter and Mary Quesenberry who have been living in our neighborhood and working with us at Mekong Minority Foundation had to return home for a period of time. My wife, Tan, works in the library there and generally the kids are learning well and loving their experience there. But we have come to the point that the FLC needs to become legal or the Thai authorities won't allow us to operate. To do so, we need to have certified teachers, an approved curriculum, and a facility that meets the normal standards for a school.

We don't meet any of the criteria. A facility that meets standards can only be built and that would cost us $300,000 minimum-and probably closer to 1 million dollars. We don't have any money to pay teachers so we are dependent on volunteers from United States. And, although we are working on it, we are short people to help develop our curriculum to become approved by the Thai education authorities. So please pray for the Family Learning Center and it's future.

Also, please pray for the children that attend and the teachers that are working at the FLC. One of our American Baptist missionary families, Chuck and Ruth Fox, are very involved in the school. They are on home assignment in the U. A European Christian organization that specializes in sponsoring children and promoting education contacted me to say that they’d like me to connect them to good local people and organizations involved with kids, particularly in the border areas. It seemed good. So I gave them some contacts of local Christian leaders and leaders in Eastern Shan State, Myanmar, with whom we work. Well, after the European representatives had come back from their time at the border and meeting with various people, they met with me one evening. They explained to me that they were not impressed with the Christian people they met. Why? Because these Christian leaders were evangelists, planting churches, and “imposing” their faith on the children and upon the people with whom they worked. Hmm. As a result, they will probably support a Buddhist children’s organization because they agree more with how the Buddhists do it. Interesting, huh?

I am used to folks who have different points of view than my own. In some cases I am able to understand and actually agree with some of their concerns that the Christians are too forceful with their religious teaching. But this time I was particularly bothered. Some of the leaders with whom we are working in Myanmar are desperately trying to help their poor. They have very little, yet they struggle to make a difference in other people’s lives. Myanmar has few schools in the villages, and about the only people who care enough to do anything are the Christians. The children’s futures have been dependent on the church and faithful leaders who establish homes for kids to live in the various towns and cities so that they can go to school. This person from the European children’s support outfit admitted that the people she met were very needy and she pitied them. But because she didn’t want these Christians imposing their faith on these children, she wouldn’t consider supporting their work.

That evening when I came home and thought about it, I began to ask myself what is “imposing our faith?” Are not we Christians asked by God to tell people about God’s great gift of Christ’s salvation? If Christian are not showing the love of Christ and allowing these kids to hear about Jesus, then who will do it? You know what? I am proud of the people I work with. I consider it a privilege to help them help the poor and needy around them, and I am proud of them for witnessing to the people they help.

One particular lady, Rev. Angela Shwe, is an inspiration to me in her sweet nature and tireless efforts. Half Shan and half Lahu, Angela has been called to help the Wa people. Because of her acceptance by the Wa Baptist Convention, she has been elected General Secretary of one entire association, meaning she is responsible for both the social and spiritual development of over 50 congregations in some of the roughest territory of Myanmar. In addition to all her responsibilities as a church leader, Angela looks after an orphanage and a day care center for toddlers whose parents live in the border towns of Tachilek and Mae Sai. Angela has never married, which may be part of the reason she’s had time to learn seven languages. When asked about when she plans to have a family, she jokes that her orphan and day care children are her family. If I had just half the dedication and perseverance of Angela I’d be pretty happy with myself.

As for me, I think it’s an honor to be able to help Angela, even if it’s just in little ways here and there. I plan to stick by her even if others think that she’s too evangelistic in her ways.
