Dear Hon'ble Chief Minister,

The Human Rights Committee of the CBCNEI (Council of Baptist Churches in North East India) met on the 11th September, 2008 at the Gauhati Mission Compound, Assam. After being provided the facts, hearing and reading of the present situation of the persecution of Christians in Orissa, the committee decided to make an Appeal the Chief Minister of the State and also to the President and Prime Minister of India. In this connection we make the following appeal to you.

The ongoing flare of violence against the minority Christian population in Orissa as we believe is in all forms an assault on the Human Dignity. The continuous targeting of the Christian Population is a reflection of systematic political violence, well planned and executed by the VHP, RSS and Bajrang Dal wings of the BJP. This has created immense fear and insecurities in the minds of the Christian population. India is a democratic republic, where respect to life is foundational to the constitution. People cannot take law an order into their hands and neither must it be allowed to do so.

We are deeply anguished about the present situation of human rights violation and lost of life and properties, and lost of the people's confidence in the state to protect them especially of the minority Christian population. The breakdown of civil administration and continued violence will have a deep impact in other states and also lead to further chaos and disunity.

We hereby appeal to the State government and Centre to take strong measures and also provide remedial measures to those affected and afflicted to regain confidence in the authority of the state. We appeal for the restoration of a civil law and order and promotion of harmony.

Yours Sincerely,

J.M. Ngul Khan Pau
General Secretary
