I had never been inside the Torres Gêmeas (Twin Towers) before, and I felt my heart beat a little faster as we walked through the gate.  Some years ago, the 12-story apartment buildings were abandoned by the owner part way through construction.  Shortly after, scores of families moved into the half-finished rooms with no electricity or running water and no doors or windows.  Today, it is estimated that around 250 people live in each tower.

A team from our church, Igreja Batista Reviver, recently worked together with Igreja Batista El Shammáh to organize an outreach evangelism ministry to the kids in the towers and the surrounding community.  We planned for around 100 to 150 children; a total of more than 200 showed up!

Our goal was to share the good news of Jesus in both word and deed.  In the morning, small teams composed of kids and adults visited all the families in the bairro to invite the children to the afternoon program called Lazer com Jesus (Having fun with Jesus).

As the ancient proverb says, “a picture is worth a thousand words” so we’ll let the photos above tell the story (click on each thumbnail to see the photo and its caption).

It is perilously easy to remain within the comfort and security of our own church.  But Jesus challenges us to step out of our comfort zone to minister to the “harassed and the helpless” (Matt. 9:36), to speak words of hope and healing.  Next week, we will meet with our Mission Mobilizers Team to pray about and plan how to help our members participate in God’s mission here at home and around the world.  After all, isn’t that what “being God’s people” is all about?

Thank you for walking with us in this ministry.  Please join us in praising the Lord for:

   * God’s people working together

   * The 200+ children and parents that heard and experienced the good news of Jesus

Que o Senhor te dê uma nova visão,
[may the Lord give you a new vision]
