Haitian asylum seekers collect recyclable bottles
Since early October of 2016, migration into Mexico has accelerated at an astonishing pace. Now that the Olympics in Brazil are over, the migrant workers who built the facilities have been traveling north with their families to find new homes.
“We hear that 15,000 people have already arrived and 30,000 are on their way, presenting a humanitarian crisis in Mexico,” says International Ministries (IM) missionary in Mexico Tim Long.
Mexican Baptists in North Baja are responding in an amazing way to this unexpected mission opportunity! Churches are leading a movement of Christ-like love and hospitality by providing shelter, food and other aid to migrant families.
American Baptists are standing with our Mexican brothers and sisters in these mission efforts. An initial grant of $10,000 in One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) emergency funding has been given to help these churches provide improved shelter and bathroom facilities, mattresses and propane for cooking. The need continues to grow as more families flood into northern Mexico, stretching churches beyond their current capacities. We now have the opportunity to increase support for the inspiring service that Mexican congregations are offering in the name of Christ.
